About this listen

The Sunday Times bestseller

’Are you ready, Max? If anyone’s going to help me do this, it’s you.’

The heart-warming tale of a life-saving friendship.

In 2006, a traumatic car accident changed Kerry Irving’s life forever.

Suffering from severe neck and back injuries, Kerry was unemployed and housebound, struggling with depression and even thoughts of suicide. He went from cycling over 600 miles a month to becoming a prisoner in his own home.

With hope all but lost, Kerry’s wife encouraged him to go on a short walk to the local shop. In the face of unbearable pain and overwhelming panic, he persevered and along the way, met an adorable yard dog named Max. As the Spaniel peered up through the railings, Kerry found comfort and encouragement in his soulful brown eyes. This chance encounter marked a turning point in both their lives.

In Max, Kerry found comfort and motivation and in Kerry, Max found someone to care for him. This is their remarkable, inspiring story.

Everyone should listen to, or read this book.

Kerry's story is a tough one, one which I have no doubt mirrors lots of other people's lives, including mine at times. It takes courage to tell a story such as this.

If Max were human, I'd wager he would wear his underwear on the outside. Such is his ability to connect with people, he even manages to do so with the reader from within this book. I've owned several dogs in my life, all different, all beautiful. My soulmate with me as I write this is a black lab by the name of Poppy, and we share a similar relationship as Kerry has with Max. Dogs are such amazing companions.

To see the bond between the two develop throughout the chapters is really quite special. The way the story makes you feel, the ups and the downs, all laid bare. The lives which Max has touched, bringing joy and happiness. All there for us to enjoy.

Couple this with the stunning Lakes backdrop. The rugged beauty complementing a wonderful story of adversity, courage, friendship and success.

I loved it. And love following their stories via Facebook.

I really can’t recommend this amazing story enough, I’m not giving anything away because if it hadn’t been recommended to me by a dear friend, I doubt that I would have pick it up.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. It's Kerry's autobiography as well as Max's and is quite moving but also has many amusing moments. I've read several books involving human and animal relationships, this is easily the best. Top marks for the sympathetic narration too. Highly recommended.
