Summary

Amit Patel is working as a trauma doctor when a rare condition causes him to lose his sight within thirty-six hours. Totally dependent on others and terrified of stepping outside with a white cane after he's assaulted, he hits rock bottom. He refuses to leave home on his own for three months. With the support of his wife Seema he slowly adapts to his new situation, but how could life ever be the way it was? Then his guide dog Kika comes along....

But Kika’s stubbornness almost puts her guide dog training in jeopardy – could her quirky personality be a perfect match for someone? Meanwhile Amit has reservations – can he trust a dog with his safety? Paired together in 2015, they start on a journey, learning to trust each other before taking to the streets of London and beyond. The partnership not only gives Amit a renewed lease of life but a new best friend. Then, after a video of an irate commuter rudely asking Amit to step aside on an escalator goes viral, he sets out with Kika by his side to spread a message of positivity and inclusivity, showing that nothing will hold them back.

From the challenges of travelling when blind to becoming a parent for the first time, Kika & Me is the moving, heart-warming and inspirational story of Amit’s sight-loss journey and how one guide dog changed his world.

Very informative, and beautifully done

This book is absolutely wonderful, it didn't just show the glossy side of having a guide dog, it told about the stress, sadness and determination needed for this lovely man's journey.

He was so blessed to have such a lovely, capable and supportive wife, I spent lots of emotions while reading this book, tears, laughs and horror at some of the public behaviour towards Dr Patel.

I cannot express properly how much I loved this book, suffice to say that I have just made a donation to Guide Dogs for the Blind.

I am so happy for the outcome of the Patel family's success which has been richly deserved, and well earned.

Brillant and really essential listening to understand what becoming blind is..

Courage to face this challenge. I heard this book on audio months ago and it has stayed with me.. I thought I understood what it ment to be blind.. but this very honest account..should be essential reading.

Heartwarming

As a guide dog owner myself, though “only” partially sighted this book had me smiling, nodding in agreement and in tears. A must read for everybody

An inspirational story!

This is a book I could not stop listening to! The courage, resilience and determination that Amit has shown in the face of adversity is so inspiring! The strong bond that Amit and Kika have is so special. I have decided to sponsor a guide dog after listening to this amazing book! I don't often leave reviews but couldn't not leave one after listening to this book. Please listen to it yourself...I have a feeling that it will bring hope to others who are maybe on a similar journey!

everyone read it

If this was a school curriculum book maybe we'd get better and Amit wouldn't get knobheads trying to shove him down escalators.
Loved it.

Beautiful, moving and insightful

Brilliant book. Shocked at the way some people in our so called civilised society can behave towards those with a disability.
Beautifully written, brilliantly read and ultimately heartwarming.
I loved Seema's chapter. But of course the real star of the book has to be Kika!
Cannot recommend this book highly enough, its engaging from the start, with some helpful resources at the end.
