Summary

It’s summer, and the annual tennis tournament between Cavendish and Charnley is underway, but a sudden spate of jewel thefts prompts James to put his sleuthing hat on. His investigation suggests that the criminals are using an ancient smuggling network.

Can he convince his good friend, DCI George Lane, of his suspicions? Has the smuggling network reopened? Are the two cyclists really tourists? Is the murder of the tennis umpire connected? Could a long-term resident really be a criminal mastermind? James desperately struggles for answers as he explores hidden tunnels, studies old maps and examines the motives of his fellow villagers.

Lovely stories, just a tad slow!

I love these stories because I love the descriptions of life in the fifties, so I don't care that they're slow with regard to the detecting part. The characters are wonderful and the narrator does amazingly with some of the dialects that come along. Although he does also have a really odd habit of leaving the word 'too' hanging off the end of a sentence like the drooping tail on a dog! It's almost like the word has bitten him and he is twice shy of it. And the author really needs to do her research: Paul Temple was never a book or books, the Paul Temple stories were from the start written as radio plays! However, these things aside, I really do recommend these books if you are interested in life in the fifties, because she does a great job of describing it. The detecting business is a bit of a side show because of that, so if you like real detective stories, these books might not be your cup of tea.

Very Enjoyable

This is the 3rd of the series I’ve listened to . They are light but very engaging .
I’ve come to like the No Nonsense Lord and his Lady 😊 The plots are more intriguing
than you’d first think . Lots of characters to think about ….and lots of delicious meals
and picnics involved !!
Like them very much .

Superb narration

Love this series. Narrator does some of the best accents and voice I've heard on audible. Love the depth and ease of listening combined in this series. Highly recommended for enjoyable, easy listening.
