About this listen

Phoebe, the soulless child, was raised by her adopted father, Eric—the universe-hopping vampire wizard from the future. Who better to raise a soulless infant than an undead monster?

Now she's out on her own! Well, almost. She has her boyfriend, Rusty, the werewolf, trying to manage his anger issues, and her uncle, a divine entity with ego issues. So far, she's getting by, but there are issues of her own to deal with—not the least of which is a horde of feral vampires taking over the world!

That's okay. There are more worlds where that one came from. But it's harder to cope without her teddy bear.

What's a girl to do?

Into the Light is the second book of Phoebe's Tale, set between book seven, Fugue, and book eight, Penumbra, of the Nightlord series.

"Whenever Poochie's not on screen, all the other characters should be asking Where's Poochie?"

We are two books (nearly 50 hours) deep into Phoebe's independent storyline now, and we are still being reminded very routinely that for all the trouble that Phoebe, Rusty and Uncle Dusty encounter, Pop would have sorted it all out and barely broken a sweat.

I like the characters, but the overall story really does suffer from the fact that Phoebe seems intent on finding her Pop but ultimately can never do so because he is on a whole different power level from everyone, including the god version of himself that he created. If he ever actually did turn up in either book, there's no real reason he couldn't resolve 99% of the issues presented with barely a flick of the wrist.

Yet despite us knowing that Eric can never really show up, virtually every character seems intent on talking about him and wishing he was present throughout both books. If it's not Phoebe wishing her pop was around because she misses him, it's Dusty dreading Eric turning back up and not being happy he has put Phoebe in danger, or it's a random set of characters living in a pocket dimension who owe their existence to Pop and wondering when he is going to turn up again.

Imagine if you tuned in to watch Andor and every character repeatedly referenced how the Jedi would solve everything if they were still around, or you were watching Peacemaker and everybody was constantly talking about how Superman would have solved the series long issue before the first commercial break in episode 1 etc,

I like Garon Whited's work, I've got the entire Nightlord collection and still look forward to new entries but I really wish that Phoebe could get some closure so she can move on from constantly needing her Pop.

Lacks identity.

I’ve absolutely loved Phoebe’s story and this book DELIVERS! I can’t wait for the next main instalment to the series now.

So happy to get more Phoebe!

More of a fun world with tons of interesting problems and solutions. But a nearly useless diety, and all the main cast don is whinge.

A nice diversion
