Summary
Penguin presents the audiobook edition of In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts by Gabor Maté, read by Daniel Maté.
To heal addiction, you have to go back to the start...
Dr Gabor Maté is one of the world's most revered thinkers on the psychology of addiction. His radical findings - based on decades of work with patients challenged by catastrophic drug addiction and mental illness - are reframing how we view all human development.
In this award-winning modern classic, Gabor Maté takes a holistic and compassionate approach to addiction, whether to alcohol, drugs, sex, money or anything self-destructive. He presents it not as a discrete phenomenon confined to a weak-willed few, but as a continuum that runs through (and even underpins) our society; not as a medical 'condition', but rather the result of a complex interplay of personal history, emotional development and brain chemistry.
Distilling cutting-edge research from around the world, In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts avoids glib self-help remedies, instead promoting self-understanding as the first key to healing and wellness. Blending personal stories and science with positive solutions, and written in spellbinding prose, it is a must-read that will change how you see yourself, others and the world.
10th anniversary edition, updated with new chapter on the Opiod crisis

Enlightening listen
Having had addiction problems all my life, and having felt with them in various ways and to varying degree of success, this book has opened my eyes to a lot of possibilities and also to the fact that it’s not actually all my fault, for that I will be eternally grateful to Dr Maté.
This is a must read for anyone with addiction issues or anyone struggling with living with or in relations with an addicted person....
Many thanks..... x

Insights Galore…
A great listen filled with major insights into the problem of addiction, a lot of which I recognised in my own past addictive behaviour.

The best addiction book I’ve ever read.
Thanks for this superbly written and accounted book. The stories help to build a picture and full understanding of life as an addict. The writers compassion and empathy connected with me and reading it I felt the same compassion for these people as I do for myself. Sobriety is a journey and this book is a supportive piece to take with you.

Informative, engaging, logical, extensive and excellently narrated. I’m my opinion some chapters are a little watered down but overall 4.5 out of 5, would listen to again, highly recommended
