Summary

The bestselling guide to the mind-body connection, revealing how stress and trauma contribute to illness and disease – and how to heal. From the author of The Myth of Normal.

Can a person literally die of loneliness?
Is there a connection between the ability to express emotions and Alzheimer's disease?
Is there such a thing as a 'cancer personality'?

In this groundbreaking book, Dr Gabor Maté shows how emotional stress and hidden trauma play a powerful role in the onset of chronic illness, cancer, and many other serious conditions.

Drawing on decades of clinical experience and scientific research, Maté reveals how the mind-body connection shapes your health, and how unresolved stress can manifest in the body as illness.

With compassion, warmth and empathy, When The Body Says No:

  • Explores how the mind-body link influences conditions and diseases such as arthritis, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, irritable bowel syndrome and multiple sclerosis
  • Shares dozens of enlightening case studies and personal and moving stories, including those of people such as Lou Gehrig (ALS), Betty Ford (breast cancer), Ronald Reagan (Alzheimer's), Gilda Radner (ovarian cancer) and Lance Armstrong (testicular cancer)
  • Reveals 'The Seven A's of Healing': principles in healing and the prevention of illness from hidden stress

Combining medical science, psychology and compassionate storytelling, When The Body Says No will empower you to understand your body, reduce stress, and take control of your health.

Gabor Maté’s connections—between the intensely personal and the global, the spiritual and the medical, the psychological and the political—are bold, wise and deeply moral. He is a healer to be cherished

Great book to prove the impact of trauma and stress has on the body but very little if any focus on what we can to resolve and heal ourselves especially from childhood traumas. Can be stressful and listening to how your own could be impacting your body. Be in a relatively good place in your own mental health before reading. But nonetheless good information to listen to and inform yourself.

What can we do to help?
