Story
Conspiracies and cover-ups, real or imagined, have shaped our world. Now leaked cables and declassified papers are rewriting the history of our times. More information must be good, but how do you tell truth from fiction? In this fresh look at 50 conspiracy theories, Ian Shircore cuts through the fog and misinformation to deliver a balanced analysis of the key facts behind unsettling suspicions that litter our recent past. Today's new evidence - from WikiLeaks, freedom of information requests and declassified archives - has solved some classic mysteries.

Story
The United Kingdom is an ancient land steeped in history and tradition, filled with prehistoric ruins, majestic castles, and a countryside sculpted from millennia of human habitation. Its rolling countryside is dotted with prehistoric burial mounds and stone circles. Medieval churches have elaborate stained glass windows and gruesome carvings, reflecting a mixture of hope and darkness. Every hamlet and village has tales that go back centuries, and folk festivals with roots in pagan times. Thus, it is not surprising that many believe the area is filled with ghosts.

In Ghosts of the Golden West, Hans Holzer and medium Sybil Leek head out west in search of the haunted, and the possessed. There's San Diego's Whaley House Ghosts; Count Wurmbrand, now deceased, who may or may not be the fulfillment of an ancient curse; an ambulance driver possessed by two victims; a disgruntled, displaced mother-in-law; sailors; Indians; Carole Lombard; Spanish monks; a disenchanted debutante; and last but hardly least, a "topless" psychic who also happens to be the mother of eight.

The book includes haunting ghost stories from Scotland. In this section we touch upon phantom soldiers, ghostly lovers, mist-shrouded kilted apparitions, murderous ministers, and even a disappearing bank in a time slip. We have kept away from previously published or documented stories which is why you will not hear about Tam O'Shanter by Burns or the ghost from Shakespeare's Scottish play.

Story
This book - which put Liverpool on the paranormal map - is about ghosts - whatever they are. Every culture has believed in ghosts at one time or another: Buddha trained himself to overcome fear by sitting in a haunted cemetery. Spooky tales are not just a contemporary phenomenon - there are several ghosts mentioned in the Old Testament. In the course of a person's lifetime, the chances of encountering a ghost are surprisingly high.

Story
Sometimes, the questions can be more interesting than the answers. The Search in Extraterrestrial Intelligence [SETI] has recently hotted up, with a whole new wave of research going to show that we will always be fascinated by what we don't understand. Was 'The Wow Signal' a radio transmission from deep space? Or was it the resonating frequency of a passing comet? Often, it can feel as if professional explainers of all stripes want to put an end to anything mysterious in life.

Mark Gatiss ( Sherlock, Doctor Who, Game of Thrones) reads chilling tales by the unsung master of the classic ghost story: E. F. Benson. There's nothing sinister about a London bus. Nothing supernatural could occur on a busy train platform. There's nothing terrifying about a little caterpillar. And a telephone, what could be scary about that? Don't be frightened of the dark corners of your room. Don't be alarmed by a sudden inexplicable chill.

The ghostly little monk of Foulridge and the giant apparition from Heaton Norris are just two of the denizens of the North-West you might not care to meet on a dark, stormy evening. I love all the old ghost stories
A good collection of ghost stories from the North West of England. The narration is quite fast, so I turned the speed down a little, there are a few from homes of old Coronation Street actors, and quite a few from old landmarks in the North West. If you click the three little dots in the top right corner of the screen, you can open a PDF of accompanying photos from the book, which I found by accident. There's a few places I want to visit now that I've heard these stories.

Great Collection of Hauntings
This was another collection of ghosts found in a particular area of England. Legendary paranormal expert Peter Underwood shares tales of hauntings from his files. There are quite a few and sure to delight paranormal enthusiasts. I read this book using immersion reading while listening to the audio book. It was an interesting account of the many haunted places in this locale.
