Story
Running parallel to the conventional history of Liverpool ... there is an unseen seam of supernatural stories that have been largely ignored by the strait-laced historians,' says Torn Slemen, who is, of course, fascinated by this other history and no subject matter is too strange or too terrifying to merit his scrutiny. While some stories may prove to be nothing more than urban myths, many turn out to be only too spine-chillingly true.

Story
The United Kingdom is an ancient land steeped in history and tradition, filled with prehistoric ruins, majestic castles, and a countryside sculpted from millennia of human habitation. Its rolling countryside is dotted with prehistoric burial mounds and stone circles. Medieval churches have elaborate stained glass windows and gruesome carvings, reflecting a mixture of hope and darkness. Every hamlet and village has tales that go back centuries, and folk festivals with roots in pagan times. Thus, it is not surprising that many believe the area is filled with ghosts.

Story
There are few things more in common across cultures than the belief in ghosts. Ghosts inhabit something of the very essence of what it is to be human. Whether we personally 'believe' or not, we are all aware of ghosts and the rich mythologies and rituals surrounding them. They have inspired, fascinated and frightened us for centuries - yet most of us are only familiar with the vengeful apparitions of Shakespeare, or the ghastly spectres haunting the pages of 19th-century Gothic literature. But their origins are much, much older.

Summary
This book - which put Liverpool on the paranormal map - is about ghosts - whatever they are. Every culture has believed in ghosts at one time or another: Buddha trained himself to overcome fear by sitting in a haunted cemetery. Spooky tales are not just a contemporary phenomenon - there are several ghosts mentioned in the Old Testament. In the course of a person's lifetime, the chances of encountering a ghost are surprisingly high. Many of the stories within this book originated from the numerous letters and telephone calls Tom Slemen received from readers of his weekly newspaper column about local mysteries and also from listeners to his many radio programs about the paranormal. The tremendous response from the public is confirmation of a widespread fascination with the paranormal. In Haunted Liverpool, take a spine-chilling journey along city's streets and meet Spring-Heeled Jack, the Penny Lane Poltergeist, Bernie with the broken neck, the Grey Lady of Grove Street and many other spooky characters and unearthly beings.

Best Book I ever read!
Absouloutly love the haunted Liverpool series and must say I have every book and audio book I think Toms ever written. I wouldn't say i was your number 1 fan like, but defo in the top 2. These stories remind me of the stories my mum used to tell me straight off the top of her head because I always wanted the ghost stories rather than 3 little pigs. My Mum is to thank for me finding your books, I suppose one good writer knows another as she has gone on to write 5 best sellers and is currently writing her 6th or 7th book to date. I just wish one of these books was narrated by a local man or woman just to be able to appreciate these tales to there full potential. Alan: Number 1 or possibly 2 fan in the whole world

Hear-say accounts and opinions, not stories
If this book wasn’t for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?
its like an audio version of the small paperback guides and folk tales on a local area, you pickup when you visit a place.
its not bad, just gets a bit dull after a few hours.
to be honest I have given up about halfway through it, there is only so many..... this person said, superstition says and I was told accounts.... I can stand!
What will your next listen be?
not sure.
How could the performance have been better?
it's perfectly adequate, just the subject gets a bit dull after a while.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Haunted Liverpool 1?
its not really that sort of book.
Any additional comments?
its not awful, just more of a local radio feature than an audio book

The Book That Started the Popular Series
This is the first book in the popular Haunted Liverpool series. Several of the stories were later published in collection books and have lost none of their amazing details. Unlike many of the other books in this field, Tom Slemen's books are extensively researched and often verified. These true tales will astonish, delight and unsettle you. They are also highly addicting. I read this book using immersion reading while listening to the audio book. Narrator Norman Gilligan's voice is perfect for this series, refined, understated and uniquely British. A must read/listen for paranormal lovers.
