Summary

An essential work for listeners seeking compassionate, wise guidance about the powerful relationship between mothers and their sons and daughters. Mother love is often seen as sacred, but for many children the relationship is a painful struggle. Using the newest research on human attachment and brain development, Terri Apter, an internationally acclaimed psychologist and writer, unlocks the mysteries of this complicated bond. She showcases the five different types of difficult mother - the angry mother, the controlling mother, the narcissistic mother, the envious mother, and the emotionally neglectful mother - and explains the patterns of behavior seen in each type.

Apter also explores the dilemma at the heart of a difficult relationship: why a mother has such a powerful impact on us and why we continue to care about her responses long after we have outgrown our dependence. She then shows how we can conduct an "emotional audit" on ourselves to overcome the power of the complex feelings a difficult mother inflicts. In the end, this audiobook celebrates the great resilience of sons and daughters of difficult mothers as well as acknowledging their special challenges.

Brilliantly written

I felt like the author wrote this about my mother. I enjoyed the different perspectives on emotions created when brought up by a difficult mother. The explanations on interpersonal skills and dilemmas they cause when you have been brought up in such a confusing environment was well written. Lastly the negative pattern that can occur later in life if we keep retelling our life stories in a bad light and the effects it can have on our brain and enjoyment in life.

If you don't understand your mom, this is the book

Easy to follow, gives you different theories as to why a daughter (or son)-mother relationship might not be working. I learned a lot.

Informative

I picked up this book to better understand my relationship with my own difficult mother. It shed some light on why I turned out the way I did, but it’s not a death sentence to be this way for the rest of my life.

It's was good but...

To me this book was just okay. I wanted more suggestions. Yes the last chapter does give some. The book does a great job outlining the issues and problems. I just felt it could have used more advice.
