Publisher's Summary

Inspired by the work of Shirley Jackson and Susan Hill and set in a crumbling country mansion, The Silent Companions is an unsettling Victorian Gothic ghost story that will send a shiver down the spine....

Newly married, newly widowed Elsie is sent to see out her pregnancy at her late husband's crumbling country estate, The Bridge. With her new servants resentful and the local villagers actively hostile, Elsie only has her husband's awkward cousin for company. Or so she thinks.

Inside her new home lies a locked room, and beyond that door lies a 200-year-old diary and a deeply unsettling painted wooden figure - a Silent Companion - that bears a striking resemblance to Elsie herself.

As Elsie's suspicions about her husband's family grow, she discovers that those around her believe a very different story - a story of just what Elsie did to end up where she is now....

Excellent narration created all the atmosphere. Good story with good twists and a good ending.

"The best book I’ve listened too!"

Such a beautifully written and narrated story. I never tired of it. Creepy but not horrific if that makes sense. Laura please write another one! I’m going to listen to it again 😀🎉🎉💕

    "A satisfying ghost story"

I thoroughly enjoyed the writing and performance of this book. The twist on a traditional ghost story was satisfying in its familiarity, while still managing to be a little creepy.

"compelling story but too long winded."

A good listen but it went on too long. I didn't feel scared but the story is very atmospheric.

    "Poor sound quality "

Really disappointed. Half way through this story I’m about to give up because I can’t hear it properly! I listen to lots of things on Audible and it’s usually fine. 😞

    Story
"captivating and a little bit eerie..."

    I loved this audible.
It was a recommendation by audible and I certainly have no regrets.
The story was easy to follow as it flitted between times, and kept making me think about it.
I thought I had the story figured out, but I was wrong.
    Subtle ending.
My recording was very quiet which is troublesome in the Car.
The narrator was clear and her reading fitted the tone of the book.
I really enjoyed this book and will definitely look out this author for hopefully more of the same.

"So-so story marred by poor narrator"

The narrator's voice is thin, high, reedy. Her acting ability is rather limited. The story has a slow start improves in second part. Not very original but OK overall.

    "Well written gothic horror story"

I really liked this book, I think this could become a horror classic. The gothic atmosphere, the old house, the village and villagers are set perfectly. There were bits I found unnecessary, like the resemblance of the silent companion to the protagonist, but if there is a follow up book explaining that I am happy to forget it!
It was very creepy to listen at dark, really made me scared.
I think this book resembles Jessie Burton's The Miniaturist in many ways- check this out if you enjoyed it. You can find a full review on my blog: excusemyreading.com
Also I must say the narration was pretty good too!
