About this listen

It's 1813. Venetia Lovell lives by the sea in Kent with her pretty, frivolous mother and idle younger brother. Venetia's father, Theo, is an interior decorator to the rich and frequently travels away from home, leaving his sensible and artistic daughter to look after the family. Venetia designs paper hangings, and she and her father often daydream about having an imaginary shop where they would display the highest quality furniture, fabrics and art to his clients.

When a handsome but antagonistic stranger, Jack Chamberlaine, arrives at the Lovells' cottage just before Christmas bringing terrible news, Venetia's world is turned upside down, and the family have no option but to move to London, to the House in Quill Court, and begin a new life. Here, Venetia's courage and creativity are tested to the breaking point, and she discovers a love far greater than she could have ever imagined....

From the multiaward-winning author of The Apothecary's Daughter, The House in Quill Court is a gorgeously evocative Regency novel bursting with historical flavour and characters you won't forget. If you love Philippa Gregory and Joanne Harris, you will adore Charlotte Betts.

Narrator was superb. love the character of Kitty and Valencia. King Midas was portrayed as a nasty 'Mafia' type character who had a lot of control. But he was controlled by his mother!

excellant

This is the third book I've listened to by this Author and have enjoyed all of them. The narrator is excellent and easy to listen to and she brings the story to life. If you haven't listened to this writer I would recommend you give her a go.

Another enjoyable story from this talented writer!

What did you like most about The House in Quill Court?

I just liked everything about it. From the humble beginnings to the drama of a life changing overnight to the terrifying battle against the local baddie!

What other book might you compare The House in Quill Court to, and why?

Florence Grace by Tracy Rees perhaps. A young girl whose life is turned upside down in an instant and then having to deal with it all.

Have you listened to any of Anne Dover’s other performances? How does this one compare?

I have listened to her recordings of other novels by Charlotte Betts and it compares favourably.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I could imagine the events at the start of the book happening in real life. Perhaps some of the later events seemed a tad far fetched but it was on the whole a very enjoyable listen.

Any additional comments?

Definitely one to recommend if you like historical fiction.
