Publisher's Summary

A pair of ritual murders could expose Mercy Kilpatrick to something terrifying: her own past...

Raised off the grid by survivalists, Mercy Kilpatrick believed in no greater safeguard than the backwoods of Oregon. Unforgiven by her father for abandoning the fold for the FBI, Mercy still holds to her past convictions. They're in her blood. They're her secrets - as guarded as her private survival retreat hidden away in the foothills.

In a cabin near her hideaway, Mercy encounters a young girl whose grandmother is dying from multiple knife wounds. Hundreds of miles away, a body is discovered slashed to death in a similar way. The victims - a city judge and an old woman living in the woods - couldn't be more different. With the help of police chief Truman Daly, Mercy must find the killer before the body count rises. Mercy knows that the past has an edge on her. So does her family. How can she keep her secrets now...when they're the only things that can save her?

    "Burning ambitions "

Although the story line wasn’t as exciting as some of Kendra’s other stories I’ve read , this was a fluid , well written and very enjoyable read/listen. With a pretty violent climax the story was well rounded off. Happy to recommend this book to anyone as Kendra is a top story teller .

    "great story, great series."

i thoroughly enjoyed this book. the story is good and the suspense level is high. As alwsys i await the next instalment of Trueman and Mercy's story because they seem to find a lot of serious trouble in such a quiet place.

    "Great Series! "

Secrets just never seem to stay a secret. Very good book in the Mercy Kilpatrick (the prepper FBI) series. Fast paced with some very strange family relationships. Two murder victims. One is a judge, the other is an older woman living so far back in the woods you have to know she lives there to find her. The locals say she's a witch. Both stabbed to death with the same stab pattern. Something connects these two but you won't find out what it is until about 3/4 of the through the book.
    Excellent narration by Terri Schnaubelt.
    HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

"Lots of mystery, action, very intense suspense,..."

...and a bit of romance. Author Kendra Elliot has another big winner in her Mercy Kilpatrick series. Oh, there is also the great narration.

    "Have Mercy! "

    4.5*'s

As always Kendra delivered a story that had me on the edge of my seat. There were a few parts that were not as fast paced as others but over all it was a fantastic read. It seems that Mercy can get herself into all kinds of trouble even if she isn't looking for it. And not just any kind of trouble. Oh no, she has to get herself buried neck deep in the snow, gun fire and well, ya know, fire.

Throughout it all she has her friends (co workers) and Truman at her side. Every step towards the answers she seeks sends her closer and closer to the answers she seeks, even if those answers may be the last thing she gets out of any of it.

I love the characters, I love the storyline and I can not wait to see what Kendra comes up with next!

"Became tedious at times. To much introspection."

The story could have been good, but the "strong" female character was meek and indecisive.

    "Another great Mercy Kilpatrick book"

I love the entire Mercy Kilpatrick series & was happy to see another book in the series come out. I can fall right into the stories from the first few sentences & just cannot stop listening til I’m though the book, then I’m sad at finishing and waiting for another book about Mercy & her life to come out.
She & the characters have become my “friends” & they are easy to visualize with the narration of Teri Schnaubelt. I hope she continues to narrate all in this series. Her change from character to character is smooth & not forced or false. Do yourself a favor & listen to the whole series.
