As a young man, Ed Catmull had a dream: To make the world’s first computer-animated movie. He nurtured that dream first as a Ph.D. student at the University of Utah, where many computer science pioneers got their start, and then forged an early partnership with George Lucas that led, indirectly, to his founding Pixar with Steve Jobs and John Lasseter in 1986. Nine years later and against all odds, Toy Story was released, changing animation forever.

It's a history told largely through the stories of the colorful, sometimes hedonistic characters who built them. And, of course, this is a full-throttle celebration of the rides, those marvels of engineering and heart-stopping thrills from an author, Stephen Silverman, whose lifelong passion for his subject shines through.

This is a spectacular story of error and innovation, a wild ride from a vision to the realization of an iconic cultural landscape. It reflects the park’s uniqueness, but just as strongly that of the man who built it with a watchmaker’s precision, an artist’s conviction, and the desperate, high-hearted recklessness of a riverboat gambler.

The action was a series of fights in the ring and I played the boxing second. I had 34 entrances and exits, very few lines and a sponge. Throughout a career in theatre, television and film spanning over 75 years, actor Peter Vaughan has kept in mind a piece of advice given to him by his father: always see the ludicrous side of things. This may come as a surprise to those who associate him mainly with menacing, even brutal characters, in everything from Sam Peckinpah's Straw Dogs to Terry Gilliam's Brazil.

Often called "Accident Park", "Class Action Park", or "Traction Park", Action Park was an American icon. Entertaining more than a million people a year in the 1980s, the New Jersey-based amusement playland placed no limits on danger or fun, a monument to the anything-goes spirit of the era that left guests in control of their own adventures - sometimes with tragic results. Action Park is the first-ever unvarnished look at the history of this DIY Disneyland, as seen through the eyes of Andy Mulvihill, the son of the park's idiosyncratic founder, Gene Mulvihill.

Loved this book so much
- By Caroline on 26-10-13
Summary
The autobiography of the man who brought the theme park concept to Britain and created some of the world's most thrilling rides and attractions. He talks about his early beginnings in the theater, circus, and magical cabaret, his time working on some of the most incredible special effects in the James Bond films (including the famous bus crash scene in Live and Let Die), and how he became associated with Madame Tussauds, the world's most famous wax museum. This led to the development of Chessington World of Adventures, then Alton Towers.
Now in its seventh edition, the book answers many questions about how enormous theme park rides are conceived and developed, and the fascinating stories behind them, including his most famous ride, NEMESIS at Alton Towers.

All the fun of the fair!
I bought the book for my husband who has been a big fan of John’ Wardley since he was a boy and I decided to listen to join him and listen to the book on Audible. It’s brilliant listening to John tell his own story and I think really adds something. I am a theme park enthusiast but even if I wasn’t it would be a entertaining and interesting story and I wish I had read the book before meeting Mr Wardley in 2019 as I have so much I would love to ask him! A truly remarkable man and maker of magic.

Great listen for theme park enthusiast.
A wonderful insight into the journey of a British theme park icon. If you love your themed entertainment, it is well worth a listen to find out some of the background on how the most influential rides in the UK came to be. The fact that it is read by John Wardley himself adds a lot in my opinion, even if the recording isn't perfect. This book is a must read for UK theme park fans and I would recommend it to anyone with a passing interest in the industry. Loved it!
