Story
The Blues were born out of need, anger and pride. Murder comes from those same dark places. Memphis has both. One of Memphis' most seductive and notorious socialites has vanished. Either she's off on another drunken escapade or the disappearance is something much more frightening. What begins as an ordinary day's work for Detective Billy Able quickly grows into a complex spider's web of tragedy, mystery, suspicion, and sordid secrets including a few of Billy's own.
Summary
She's lost everything, except her life....
Lieutenant Lorraine Page once had everything - a devoted husband, two beautiful daughters and an impressive career with the Homicide Squad. It's impossible to believe that she could be thrown out of the police force and end up on Skid Row.
Without Lorraine, her colleagues struggle on, as the hunt for a nightmare serial killer spirals into an all-out search for a missing witness: a victim who escaped.
But Lorraine Page is about to be brought right back into that world again. Against her will she is drawn into the investigation and forced to face her past and her overwhelming guilt....
Based on a true story, the complete and unabridged Lorraine Page trilogy available for the first time in audio.

Okay story with horrid audio-editing and narrator
There were a few reviews that really disliked the book which made me hesitant to buy it. But I really love everything I've read from Lynda La Plante so far (which is quite a lot) and so I decided to give this audiobook a go. Contrary to some other reviewers I had no trouble getting pulled into the story right away. I didn't think it had a slow start at all. I've enjoyed the story but the narrator did everything she could to ruin it for me. Her normal reading voice is - albeit somewhat nasal - pleasant enough to listen to. I'm always using headphones but that's not a good idea with this narrator. She uses a weird, horribly nasal, high pitched, shrieking voice for one of the female characters in the book which hurt my ears - I immediately had to turn the volume down every time the narrator was using this voice. She also made one of the male characters in the book sound as if he had a few roos loose in the top paddock. And again I had to turn down the volume with this character because it was really hurting my ears, which was incredibly irritating! But I guess that also has to do with some really bad audio editing, which I think is quite unacceptable considering it's not unthinkable that people will listen to this book using earbuds or headphones! And, like someone else already mentioned as well, the narrator uses accents for some of the characters that were really out of place. This story would have been way more enjoyable had the narrator refrained from using loud, nasal, shrieking New York (or thereabouts) accents. And that has nothing to do with the New York accent per se - give me Fran Drescher's the Nanny or Cindy Lauper anytime - but here it was misplaced, annoying and LOUD.

This is the worst one she has written.
She has really stooped to the gutter for this material.
She should stay with British style and the Americans to theirs

Being a Brit I have always liked Lynda La Plante's work but I have to say,the chapters were long and I found it really difficult to finish it. Quite disappointed 😞 really. Narration didn't help as her voice was whiney & she struggled with the changes. was hoping for good things but quite disappointed.

OMG - IT'S THAT BAD!
The reviews that criticise the narrator are mostly very generous! If it was a B movie radio show from the 50's then the accents would be bad, maybe get away with it as a farce of one? Usually I can tune out a narrator if necessary.....

Listener Beware
Despite the 2010 publication date provided by Audible, I believe 2010 is either a republication date or the date the book was recorded. I mention this because "Cold Shoulder" is not the same quality fiction as Lynda La Plante's Jane Tennison or Anna Travis series.
In addition to unsympathetic characters and unnecessary length, it is the narrator who earns my review of "Cold Shoulder" the title Listener Beware. The narrator has only one voice to differentiate characters and that voice is an unpleasant, whiney stereotype of working class New Jersey. This is also inappropriate given that the book's setting is California.

Terrible Reader
The story was fine, but the reader was distractingly bad. Every character except the protagonist sounded like a 1920s cartoon gangster or Blanche Du Bois. Bizarre and ultimately annoying. The author also uses the odd Britishism (I believe she is British) like "18 stone," "row," or going to "get a curry" that sounds discordant in a book set among LA cops . Anyway, I am glad this one was included or I would definitely be returning it.

Painful
The story would have been tolerable, but the narrator made it painful. You know what to expect with Lynda La Plante. Nothing too cerebral, an escapist pot boiler. I dare say if I were reading rather than listening, I would have read the whole trilogy, but this is just too hard to listen to. I’ve been listening to audiobooks for many years and now have several hundred in my library, but I can honestly say that this is the worst narration I’ve heard and won’t be listening to the other books, no matter how enticing the sample (which it wasn’t). This is a narrator who makes children sound like cartoon characters and “grizzled” police sergeants sound like they’re in a sitcom - and don’t get me started on the topic of volume control!
In a word - dreadful.

Worst narrator
I’m only on chapter 1 and the narrator is making my ears bleed. I have to use headphones at work and between her whispering the main characters and then screeching every other character, I’m not sure I can finish. Also it’s based in California so why did she decide to do NJ accents for half the characters ?! One last thing, baby talk is not necessary, we all know it’s a kid talking,

Culturally Inaccurate
The author is British and that is overly apparent. The setting however is Southern California, where I was born, raised, and still live. Natives to this area would you not refer to Indian food as a curry, we do not refer to money as notes we say bills, we refer to weight in pounds not stones. These are just a few of the cultural inaccuracies. There are too many to mention. She really should have had a Southern California editor read through to catch these errors.
Then there's the narrator. She gave most of the characters North Eastern American accents, which just doesn't work in the Southern California setting. They were cringy bad.
If you are not familiar with American culture specifically Southern California American culture you're probably not going to be bothered by the inaccuracies. There were just to many to ignore for me, which distracted from the story. I couldn't finish it. The characters weren't believable, which made me not care about them. I didn't care to see how it ended for any of them.
Disappointing 😞
