Summary

Henry Pierce has a whole new life - new apartment, new telephone, new telephone number. But the first time he checks his messages, he discovers that someone had the number before him. The messages on his line are for a woman named Lilly, and she is in some kind of serious trouble.

Pierce is inexorably drawn into Lilly's world, and it's unlike any world he's ever known. It is a night-time world of escort services, websites, sex, and secret identities. Pierce tumbles through a hole, abandoning his orderly life in a frantic race to save the life of a woman he has never met.

Pierce's skills as a computer entrepreneur allow him to trace Lilly's last days with some precision. But every step into Lilly's past takes him deeper into a web of inescapable intricacy - and a decision that could cost him everything he owns and holds dear.

Not one of his best...

I did struggle to finish this and did not really enjoy the denouement which I found disappointing. However I am a great fan of Michael Connelly and am already looking forward to reading my next one!

Very good but not as good as Bosch

Great listen, but not on the same level as his other books. Maybe the reason he has not returned to this character. Once again Connelly got me researching something, this time molecular science - I always get some knowledge of something different in his books. Good plot but a little predictable, reasonably well read although I found the reader a bit rushed at times. Overall well worth listening to

Disappointing

I've read or listened to nearly all Michael Connelly's books and I've really enjoyed them. This one, though, is very disappointing. The plot is confused, the characters are weak, and the ending is just plain silly. Deus ex machina.

Hard work

Well written but poor idea. Maybe it's good if you can empathise with a computer geek who is the main character

Brilliant original plot

Really enjoyed this novel. Lots of twists and turns. Finished it in 2 days. Not the usual MC plot but nonetheless is excellent.

Compulsive

I love this authors books. Compelling listen. Suprise ending which did not detract from early part of the book.

Awful … can’t believe it’s a Connelly

This really is an awful story, not one bit of it is anywhere close to believable. It lacks credibility so much & so often that I couldn’t get beyond a third of the way in. It may be a late ‘blossomer’, but I couldn’t stick with it any further.

In fact it’s so poor I struggle to accept it’s a Michael Connelly book.

Poor storyline

Like many readers I’m a huge fan of Michael Connelly, I’m at a loss as to how it could pass scrutiny with such a poor storyline. The threads of the plot are all over the place and the moves the main character makes just don’t make sense. Disappointing but well narrated.
