About this listen

“Stephenson has a once-in-a-generation gift: he makes complex ideas clear, and he makes them funny, heartbreaking, and thrilling.” - Time

The #1 New York Times bestselling author of Anathem, Neal Stephenson is continually rocking the literary world with his brazen and brilliant fictional creations - whether he’s reimagining the past (The Baroque Cycle), inventing the future (Snow Crash), or both (Cryptonomicon). With Reamde, this visionary author whose mind-stretching fiction has been enthusiastically compared to the work of Thomas Pynchon, Don DeLillo, Kurt Vonnegut, and David Foster Wallace - not to mention William Gibson and Michael Crichton - once again blazes new ground with a high-stakes thriller that will enthrall his loyal audience, science and science fiction, and espionage fiction fans equally. The breathtaking tale of a wealthy tech entrepreneur caught in the very real crossfire of his own online fantasy war game, Reamde is a new high - and a new world - for the remarkable Neal Stephenson.

Critic reviews

“Stephenson...delivers a sprawling thriller that shows him in complete control of his story.” (Publishers Weekly)

“Noir futurist Stephenson returns to cyberia with this fast-moving though sprawling techno-thriller...Who’ll prevail? We don’t know till the very end, thanks to Stephenson’s knife-sharp skills as a storyteller. An intriguing yarn—most geeky, and full of satisfying mayhem.” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review)

“Sometimes when you’re reading Neal Stephenson, he doesn’t just seem like one of the best novelists writing in English right now; he seems like the

only one.” (Lev Grossman, Time)

It may be a long book at around 38 hours but the story, characters and construction are fabulous. The way the storylines split, weave around each other and then come back together for the climactic end game was very well accomplished. The narrator did a great job at holding my attention and in many cases anxious intrigue along the way. Some of the Scottish/Welsh/English accents were a bit ropey but good enough to be credible. A definite 5 stars from me.

Wow! What a cracking listen.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Set in the present day, Reamde takes the listener on a wild ride across both virtual and real world locations. Combining classic Stephenson super-clever spins on current and near-future technologies with "Bourne Supremacy" level action, this one's all killer and no filler.

What did you like best about this story?

It's got a sense of humour and real heart but does not pull punches in terms of characters or situational development.

What about Malcolm Hillgartner’s performance did you like?

Great pace.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

"Reamde : Staying alive is more than a game"

Any additional comments?

It's got the length of "Cryptonomicon" with the pace of "Snow Crash" - highly recommend for all Stephenson fans.

Fast-paced, ultimately satisfying!

Bloated, yet engaging, unconnected characters that implausibly run towards each other and connect in the last few chapters. For most of the book you are thinking "WHAT'S THIS GOT TO DO WITH ANYTHING" only for all the loose ends to tie up completely in the last couple of chapters. But surprisingly enjoyable for all that, can see it as a long running TV series, like Lost, but everything makes sense in the end.

Unconnected stories that implausibly connect

If you could sum up Reamde in three words, what would they be?

Epically convoluted adventure

What did you like best about this story?

This stunning quest for gold and revenge manages to cross half the real world and a fantasy one too. Non stop plot that never looses the thread.

What does Malcolm Hillgartner bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Hillgarten's reading lights up the characters, and even though his Russian/Hungarian accents verge through Mexico and Pakistan, his English accent is so POSH it's almost comic, and his Welsh is um.... he's obviously never heard a Welsh accent, he keeps the pace going so that one wants to just keep listening.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

This could not be made into a film. Maybe a series of films. There is just too much stuff.

Any additional comments?

I'll be looking for more by both the author and the narrator. Very good listening.

Quality and quantity - can't go wrong.

Crossing the earth and the virtual world this story keeps you gripped. I’m not a gamer but still found those aspects of the story gripping. But, and it’s a big but, British listeners (or anyone who has ever met a Scottish, English, Welsh or indeed an Irish person) will find the reader’s accents almost unbearable. My goodness wouldn’t a voice coach have been a good idea!

International thriller in the real and virtual worlds
