About this listen

A mage and a bodyguard want to open a cosy bookshop. They will discover a world of adventure . . .

Brimming with magic, sapphic romance and plenty of tea, this is a heart-warming journey for fans of Travis Baldree's Legends & Lattes and TJ Klune.

Reyna and Kianthe dream of opening a friendly book shop together, serving the very best tea and cakes. Worn wooden floors, plants on every table, firelight drifting between the rafters – all complemented by love and good company. But Reyna is an elite bodyguard to a vengeful queen, and Kianthe is the most powerful mage in existence.

Leaving their lives behind seems . . . impossible. Yet they flee to Tawney, a town nestled in the icy peaks of dragon country. There, they open the bookstore they'd always wanted.

What follows is a tale of mishaps, mysteries, dragons, and a murderous queen throwing the realm’s biggest temper tantrum. Through it, these two women will discover what they mean to each other – and their world.

Can’t Spell Treason Without Tea by Rebecca Thorne is a gorgeous treat of a book, filled with cosy adventure, sapphic romance and good feelings. The series continues with A Pirate's Life for Tea.

Critic reviews

Realistic, loveable characters? Check. Witty, well-paced writing that’s a delight to read? Check. Women with swords and magic? Banter for days? PUNS? Check, check, check! (OK, maybe I’m the only one excited about that last one) (Sarah, from Goodreads)
If I could give this book 1 million stars, I would. This book is SAPPHIC (but not spicy). And so, so, so, so sweet. It’s like a warm hug with a little side of adventure. Add to it the representation of HEALTHY relationships and mental health struggles and ma’am. Plus throw in a sprinkle of magic and badass women and dragons (Kitty, from Goodreads)

The relationship between the main characters is full of all the fears and euphoria of starting a life together, the thrill of breaking boundaries and the contentment that comes with a warm cup of tea. I love this book.

Wonderful love story with as adventure at it's heart

So the story is super cute which is the only reason I carried on listening. The author repeats the phrase “my girlfriend” and “her girlfriend” a stupid amount of times (56 times - I word searched the e book in the end). Sometimes the phrase works and at the beginning it felt more like the author was getting across how nice it was for the two main characters to be able to refer to each other as that and it was cute. But after a while it was just jarring. “She held her girlfriends hand”, “she looked at her girlfriend”, “she said to her girlfriend” etc etc. It was a really unnatural way of wording things.

Other than that - cute story! Great narration and can honestly recommend if you can get past the repetitive phrase. I’d have enjoyed more if I’d read it as opposed to audible as can ignore easier and will likely read the sequel at some point.

Good narrator, cute story, annoying repetition

Filled with wonderful romantic moments, thrilling scenes and intriguing characters. A good amount of tension and jokes that make the listening great.

Heartwarming and Thrilling

First things first the narrator does a 10/5 Oscar worthy performance.
As for the story, I loved the characters and the romance.
Overall 10/5 narration and 5/5 story, would spend a credit again, and I think everyone else should do the same.

Great first book, excited for the next one!!

a fun and cosy adventure. I found the narrator's enthusiasm really great, however, found their attempt at different accents threw me a little bit. other than that I found this book quite enjoyable
