Librarian Carrie Singleton is building a haven, but one of her neighbors is misbehavin'. Can resident spirit Evelyn help Carrie catch the culprit who made her a ghost?

In winter, the Haunted Library is a refuge for homeless townspeople. When a group purchases a vacant house to establish a daytime haven for the homeless, Carrie offers the library as a meeting place for the Haven House committee, but quickly learns that it may be used for illegal activities.

As the new Sunshine Delegate, Carrie heads to the hospital to visit her cantankerous colleague, Dorothy, who had fallen outside the local supermarket. She tells Carrie that her husband tried to kill her - and that he murdered her Aunt Evelyn, the library's resident ghost, six years earlier.

And then Dorothy is murdered - run off the road as soon as she returns to work. Evelyn implores Carrie to find her niece's killer, but that's no easy task: Dorothy had made a hobby of blackmailing her neighbors and colleagues. Carrie, Evelyn, and Smoky Joe the cat are on the case, but are the library cards stacked against them?

I’m so glad I tried these. I needed a nice entertaining book and to have a series with great characters is perfect!

A new narrator to love

This was a lot of fun, I have finished this in three days I think, but enjoyed listening to Mia Gaskins, she is a wonderful narrator and hearing her do a cat's meow is hilarious. Not going to lie the death was a surprise... The story was interesting and answered a lot of questions, but there are still unanswered ones and I really would like to see a three way conversation between Carrie, Dillon and Evelyn, where Dillon says something like, Hold on, it's not two against one, that's not fair that doesn't count no offence but Evelyn sweetheart your dead! Evelyn says you're an ass! This is true, but doesn't distract from the fact that I'm right, so there! Dillon playfully sticks out his tongue.

I have listened to the first 3 books as they were included with my membership. I wasnt sure at first but they are an easy listen while I'm doing craft or cooking. Narrator is good and I think I will purchase the next one.

Easy listen, not too taxing

I really enjoyed this book. This is the first book by this author I have read or listened to but it won't be my last, in fact as this is actually book three in the series I have already downloaded the previous two audio books to enjoy and find out how it all came about. I loved everything about this book from the great and like able characters to the mystery. There was a lot of characters to get to know but the story was well written so at no point did I lose track as to who everybody was. I especially liked the ghost that wanted to help but was reluctant, it added a fun syfy element to the story. There was also a lot of different elements going on, so it kept the story interesting with the running of the library, the main characters love life, her best friends Wedding plans and of course the mystery. They are all connected and do play a part in helping to solve the murder, so again at no point did I wish the author would just get back to investigating because it never really stopped. The mystery it's self was good and kept you guessing although it took a while for the murder to happen but that was only because the scene was being set. Over all a fun cozy mystery and what looks like a good series. I am off to find out by starting at book number one.
Carrie as head of events for the local library is given more responsibility and is made head of the sunshine delegate. This just means when a member of staff is hurt or sick she needs to send cards or flowers. Her first recipient is the most hated member
of staff Dorothy, who falls while out shopping and ends up in hospital. Carrie decided to score some brownie points with her boss and the libraries ghost, who is the aunt of the injured woman, by visiting her in hospital.There she meets a very different woman, gone is her abrasive and rude attitude, she is even afraid of her husband and claims her husband tried to kill her. Is she right? when Carrie visits her at home she denies ever having said anything and is back to her usual mean self. At the same time the Librarians are short staffed and the last things they end is a group of homeless people causing trouble. Then Dorothy is killed in a hit and run. Should she have been afraid of her husband? While trying to find out Carrie discovers the reason why Dorothy was hated by everyone was that the motive? Or was it because she wouldn't lend her brother money to start a up a shelter to help the homeless in town? Can solving the murder also help to find answers to the library ghosts death? Carrie is determined to find out.
I liked the narrator. She helped to bring the story to life and was a real assets to the story.

Good easy book to listen to as a sequel in the series.
The good part is these can also be listened to as standalone rather than listening to as part of the series.

Easy clear narration and a good easy story to listen to.

Listening to the 3 books that are included, I ended up listening to the first and last 90 minutes of the last 2, and don’t think I missed anything.

I tried hard to like the main character, but couldn’t. She ( to me) is annoying, self centred, smug and the biggest teller of everyone’s secrets, that are not relevant to the case.

And, I don’t need to know that when she went to the bathroom she washed her hands, brushed her hair and put on lipstick.

The story could be easily told in a couple of hours..

That said author, you’re 1000 better than I could ever do!!

Continuity errors, again: Carrie bought a book for the boy and a doll for the girl but when she arrived for her visit she gave the boy an electronic game and the girl a book. Repetitive: recaps can be useful, but there are too many. In my review of the previous book I said the ghost, Evelyn, should have a more prominent role so I was pleased this happened; there is now a reason for her to haunt the library through spying and reporting to Carrie. This book was improved by having a much 'darker', more sinister feel at the beginning, but unfortunately it lapsed into silliness. The focus on the social issues was realistic and enhanced the plot. There appeared to be some asides that were not relevant, at least not yet. Carrie appears to have her own personal police officer; he comes to her aid immediately; really! The ending was disappointing: rather than tie up loose ends, it began a new thread, which I assume will be the start of the next book in the series. The narrator was good but her pausing could be better.

Began well but fizzled out.
