Summary

In 2008 Sean Conway set off on a 1,000 mile bike ride that would shape the next 10 years of his life, as he became obsessed with the idea of becoming a real ultra cyclist. This is his story, how he tried and failed many times to break a cycling world record, and the story about his final world record attempt, cycling 4,000 miles across Europe. Sean nearly gave up on his dream after tragically losing two of his ultra cycling friends, but decided to continue in their honor with his quest to chase big miles on two wheels. Sean looks back at some of his cycling heroes and heroines and the boom in ultra cycling over the last decade.

Ordinary guy, extraordinary adventures

Loved this book, Sean takes you on an audible adventure of a challenge and a half. It was easy to visualise what was being described which transported you on to the route along with him. Listened to the book twice now and I’m sure I’ll listen to it again.

Epic Tales of Unhygienic Adventures

I really enjoyed his very real take on what in many of our minds are epic adventures. They are certainly that. But Sean’s openness about the challenges and his descriptions of the less hygienic aspects of big mile cycling ensure you leave with an almost palpable feeling of just how astonishing these achievements are, and how the glamour of breaking records is a long way from the reality of the actual doing. Great to hear him narrate too.

Inspirational!

Diolch yn fawr Sean. I am brand new to cycle touring and thought about dipping my toe in the shallow end after listening to your book. But, I’m enthused and motivated to dive in the deep end now.
You’ve given me the kickstart I needed.
Da iawn, sir. Keep rolling.

Inspirational & gritty, great mid-stretching read

This was exactly what I needed for recovery from injury. Hearing about relatable troubles and triumphs is both cathartic and makes me hungry for another bikepacking adventure. It may just be riding a bike, but it's a life journey for those who choose it. Big love Sean!

Sean Conway inspires the “Big Mile” Athlete in all of us

Purely inspirational - I wanted to hop on my bike the whole time I was listening. Can’t wait to put some of Sean’s insights to work on my future bikepacking adventures!

Great book when on an a road trip.

Sean’s stories kept me wanting to hear more. I loved hearing about the high and lows of each day on the road, imagining myself exactly where he was, except Russian roads, yikes. My favorite supporting character was Pedro. Congrats to Sean on this great achievement, the ride and the book.

Great Story

I'm a life long cyclist who is just now getting interested in the idea of endurance cycling... or "Big Mile Cycling". This was a great listen, will probably give it another listen soon.

What happened to Pedro?

Loved listening to this adventure. Well done Sean. An amazing challenge and a story of overcoming adversity time and time again to achieve the goal and beating the record. However, what happened to Pedro?

Good Read

Good for someone who has gone through some long distance cycling.
For other people I don't think it will be a good read.
Sometimes I think the author was trying too hard to make the book a little bit bigger and it was not necessary!

Perfection.

An elloquent, detailed, entertaining account of an incredible journey. His narration is spot on, making you feel closer to the event through the voice of the man that lived it. As an endurance athlete, it absolutely gave me the fix i was looking for.
