Summary

Having already pedalled 18,000 miles from Britain to Beijing, Charlie Walker’s homeward leg carried him a further 26,000 miles through Central Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.

The two-and-a-half-year journey spanned the mountains and deserts of former Soviet Republics, Afghanistan on the fearful brink of foreign withdrawal, and remote corners of the Congolese jungle. From hiking through sandstorms in the Gobi desert to barreling down rapids in a dugout canoe, this perilous adventure, and Charlie’s many encounters along the way, gives insight into the past, present, and future of often-overlooked places during periods of great change.

Brilliant

I finished Charlie Walker’s two books in three days as I couldn’t stop listening. The way he wrote his books really made you feel like you were there on his bicycle with him… So it almost feels unfair to the author that I cut a multiple year journey into such a small amount of time. However, I do feel that this book will echo in day dreams for years to come of what it would be like to go on such a turbulent adventure.
His dive into the history of the areas he visited really helped with understanding and imagining the type of surroundings he found himself in, as well as the frame of mind of the people he encountered.
I understand he has since had a stint in a Russian prison since this book and so I be waiting eagerly for the next instalment. I do however hope he stays out of prisons for his next journey so we can enjoy more books.

Wow - what an adventure!

Very well written and narrated book about the quite phenomenal adventures of Charlie Walker.
It’s hard to summarise his trip as there is just so much going on in the book! But I would definitely recommend this book to any travel/cycling enthusiast and I am looking forward to downloading his other book. 😊

Stunning Storytelling!

A true adventure! Absorbing and exciting. I saw Charlie speak at a "Night of Adventure" event years ago. I gave his books a try, expecting a familiar RTW cycle tale, but this and the Charlie's first book are just something else entirely! I enjoyed both so much

Gripping Story

I almost gave up on this after 20 minutes as Charlie's reading style left me cold. It felt like he was reading a shopping list. However, I persevered and eventually warmed to his monotone, clipped style of narration. I was glad I did as the story was truly gripping. I've listened to a few long distance journey books but most enjoyed this one due to the constant peril he always seemed to put himself in.

Enthralling journey

Listening to the book, you can feel like you're travelling with Charlie through all the crazy roads he takes. It is beautiful to listen to tales of people from places you barely hear about. Not only is the journey enthralling, the book is very well written and Charlie is a great reader. For books like these where the author is writing about a personal story, it makes a huge difference when the audiobook is read by the author, because the right emotion can be added to places based on the author's experience.

Excellent

I don’t normally write reviews but want to give this book a 5 star review. The authors personal journey is incredible but that’s not even my favorite part. He is able to capture your imagination and interest by telling his personal experiences of the many types of people/cultures he came across.

One of the most beautifully told stories I’ve ever heard.

Narrated by the author. Charlie is precise, pragmatic and poetic with his account of his adventure across Europe Asia and Africa. I’ve never had non fiction make me cry. Truly inspiring, humorous and educational, not for a minute was I bored. Best thing you could listen to.

Amazing

What a story of adventure. Thank you sir for rekindling my wonderment of the world. If nothing else, I saw the fools errand of letting doubt and societal pressure corral us into smaller worlds. Thanks again.

What a fantastic story

You really don’t know other countries and there people unless you travel. And not just travel but engage with the people that make up the country. Walker does a brilliant job of bring these people to light. What a journey!
