About this listen

Having already pedalled 18,000 miles from Britain to Beijing, Charlie Walker’s homeward leg carried him a further 26,000 miles through Central Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.

The two-and-a-half-year journey spanned the mountains and deserts of former Soviet Republics, Afghanistan on the fearful brink of foreign withdrawal, and remote corners of the Congolese jungle. From hiking through sandstorms in the Gobi desert to barreling down rapids in a dugout canoe, this perilous adventure, and Charlie’s many encounters along the way, gives insight into the past, present, and future of often-overlooked places during periods of great change.

Charlie Walker knows how to write an adventure story and what a bold adventure this is! Much more than a typical round the world tourist style bike ride, the journey taken goes way beyond the beaten tourist trail into areas of the world that perhaps should not be visited alone, and for good reason. Quite sad for the story to end when it did, really enjoyed the take on history and quotes at start of each chapter.

what an adventure!

Listening to Charlie’s second book and having had the good fortune to listen to him speak in person, I am struck again by his humility, honesty and occasional lunacy! This is a great book, a window into what we are capable of if we just set our ambitions high enough.

Inspiring and down to earth

Nothing really to dislike about this story. Very well written, excellently read. Charlie Walker has a beautiful command and use of the English language fitting for an epic journey.

Love this story

I’m sad I’ve finished these books. I loved Charlie’s tales and they way he writes is both fascinating and light. I felt I was on the journey with him.
