Summary
In this exciting historical mystery debut set in Victorian England, a wealthy young widow encounters the pleasures - and scandalous pitfalls - of a London social season.
Frances Wynn, the American-born Countess of Harleigh, enjoys more freedom as a widow than she did as a wife. After an obligatory year spent mourning her philandering husband, Reggie, she puts aside her drab black gowns, leaving the countryside and her money-grubbing in-laws behind. With her young daughter in tow, Frances rents a home in Belgravia and prepares to welcome her sister, Lily, arriving from New York - for her first London season.
No sooner has Frances begun her new life than the ghosts of her old one make an unwelcome appearance. The Metropolitan Police receive an anonymous letter implicating Frances in her husband’s death. Frances assures Inspector Delaney of her innocence, but she’s also keen to keep him from learning the scandalous circumstances of Reggie’s demise. As fate would have it, her dashing new neighbour, George Hazelton, is one of only two other people aware of the full story.
While busy with social engagements on Lily’s behalf, and worrying if Reggie really was murdered, Frances learns of mysterious burglaries plaguing London’s elite. The investigation brings death to her doorstep, and Frances rallies her wits, a circle of gossips, and the ever-chivalrous Mr. Hazelton to uncover the truth. A killer is in their midst, perhaps even among her sister’s suitors. And Frances must unmask the villain before Lily’s season - and their lives - come to a most unseemly end.

Accent distracting
The story is lovely and the narrator was pretty good, but the inconsistent American accents were really distracting. You might not notice it if you’re not American, but it really stuck out for me.

I liked it ...
Firstly, the narrator, I think that Karen Cass is ALWAYS excellent; she has narrated many of the books in my Audible Library and I know that when I buy a title with her as narrator, I can rely on a good listen, whatever the quality of the text she's been given.
As for the story, I liked it. It was an engaging story that kept me entertained. It had good pace and descriptions of dresses, rooms, or whatever were mercifully succinct.
I did guess what was going on re the murder(s) about three quarters of the way through, but that didn't stop my enjoyment and of course, if you guess, you have to get to the end to see if you're right!
Regarding the historical inaccuracies mentioned by previous reviewers, while I agree, it wasn't enough to spoil a good story for me. It IS after all, fiction, and enough was done to take me into a different time period.
There are a few different authors in my library who hail from the U.S. and who have set their stories at a particular period in British history. Some are more successful at being convincing than others - sadly some are actually downright annoying! - but not Dianne Freeman - I will get her next book.
My humble, general advice to such authors from 'across the pond', however, is to forget ALL pre-conceived ideas and myths about British life in a particular time period and research well-documented facts. Particularly if their plot devices rely on particular attitudes, laws and the way we Brits lived at a given time.
They should also visit Britain at least once.
Now, to get book 2 to see what happens next with a rather plucky and independent Victorian lady ...

Very different my usual books
I normally listen to regency romances but stubled on this book book in the "you might also like" section and gave it a go. The story was very good with a nice twist but I wish all the men had not sounded the same in the narration.
