These popular journals threw up such literary greats as Dickens, Conan Doyle, Rider Haggard, and Jerome K. Jerome. Many of the great writers are undeservedly neglected by modern audience...but what a pleasure it is to rediscover the literary treasures that delighted our great grandparents!

Sherlock Holmes was created by British author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Referring to himself as a "consulting detective" in the stories, Holmes is known for his proficiency with observation, deduction, forensic science, and logical reasoning that borders on the fantastic, which he employs when investigating cases for a wide variety of clients, including Scotland Yard. Holmes first appeared in print in 1887's A Study in Scarlet, the character's popularity became widespread with the first series of short stories in The Strand Magazine, beginning with "A Scandal in Bohemia" in 1891.

An assassination attempt is made on Tsar Nicholas II of Russia at the Hotel Adlon in Berlin. However, the criminal police suspect that the attack was intended for Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany, who had received the Russian guest. The Hound of the Baskervilles is Arthur Conan Doyle's third Sherlock Holmes novel, first published in 1901–1902. Set in Dartmoor, it follows Holmes and Watson investigating a legendary supernatural hound said to haunt the Baskerville family. The novel marked Holmes's return after his presumed death. The story begins in 1889 when Dr. James Mortimer asks Holmes to look into the Baskerville family curse. The legend tells of Sir Hugo Baskerville, who was killed by a monstrous hound after kidnapping a farmer's daughter. Since then, the hound is believed to haunt the family, causing mysterious deaths.

Silver Blaze, one of the 56 Sherlock Holmes short stories written by Sir Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, is one of 12 in the cycle collected as The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes. Doyle ranked "Silver Blaze" 13th in a list of his 19 favourite Sherlock Holmes stories. Sherlock Holmes and his partner Dr. Watson travel by train to Dartmoor to investigate a crime of disappearance of the great race horse Silver Blaze and the murder of the horse's trainer, John Straker.
