1903. A darkness has descended on London. A series of grisly murders are uncovered, trophies taken, bodies arranged and soon there are whispers of Jack the Ripper’s return. A new client arrives at Baker Street seeking Sherlock Holmes’s help: Dr. Jekyll claims his friend has been wrongfully accused of the hideous crimes, a friend called Mr. Edward Hyde, whose very existence relies on a potion administered by the doctor himself. But the case becomes more complicated, more unsettling than simply proving Mr. Hyde’s innocence.

Sherlock Holmes is hired by an impresario named Harvey Barker to find his missing wife, Bian. Holmes investigates the circus scene and stumbles upon a case involving a tattoo. The case is gruesome and bizarre, and Holmes and Watson must track down an unscrupulous collector.

During the height of the Great War, Joanna Holmes and the Watsons receive a late-night, clandestine visit from Sir William Radcliffe, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, who brings with him an agonizing tale of blackmail; a case so sensitive that it can only be spoken of in the confines of 221B Baker Street. An unknown individual has come into possession of salacious photographs, which not only sullies the family name, but may force the chancellor to vacate his seat on the War Council where his advice is most needed.

Sherlock Holmes is asked for help by an old friend whose daughter has been kidnapped. The English detective travels to Hamburg and becomes embroiled in an adventure that apparently has its origins in an Indian legend and the cholera epidemic of 1892.

With his devoted Dr Watson, Holmes emerges from his smoke-filled rooms in Baker Street to grapple with the forces of treachery, intrigue and evil, including the diabolical Professor Moriarty.

Sherlock Holmes’s discovery of a mysterious musical score initiates a devious Christmas challenge set by Irene Adler, with clues that are all variations on the theme of “theft without theft”, such as a statue missing from a museum found hidden in the room it was taken from. In the snowy London lead-up to Christmas, Holmes’s preoccupation with the “Adler Variations” risks him neglecting the case of his new client, Norwegian arctic explorer Fridtjof Nansen, who has received a series of threats in the form of animal carcasses left on his doorstep.

Together with Dr. John Watson, he investigates in sinister opium dens and a mysterious moated castle. Along the way, he meets a shady opera singer, an enigmatic gnome, and a derelict abortionist.
