Mike and his group made it through the initial induction of Earth into the System and are using the training they received before that to try to help people in the area, all while growing more powerful. Rescuing the survivors in the suburbs of the nearby town leads to them running into all sorts of new monsters, gaining levels quickly as they clear out the threats, and rescuing the few survivors from those areas.
