1944, à 40 kilomètres de Florence. Alors que les troupes alliées gagnent du terrain et que les bombes tombent sur la campagne toscane, Ulysses Temper, un jeune soldat anglais, fait la connaissance d’Evelyn Skinner, célèbre historienne de l’art qui parcourt le pays pour sauver les oeuvres des décombres.
