  • How to Listen Like a Master Coach: The 4 Levels of Listening Explained
    Jun 8 2026

Have you ever felt truly, deeply heard by another person? It is a rare gift that unlocks incredible growth and potential, yet most of us only ever scratch the surface of what it means to really listen. In this video, we explore the four levels of listening and how they serve as a superpower for coaches, leaders, and friends alike. We start by looking at the philosophy of emergence coaching, which suggests that the answers you seek are already within you. The role of a great listener isn't to provide advice, but to create a space where your own inner wisdom can bubble to the surface. To do this effectively, we must understand the different ways we process information during a conversation. You will learn about the ground floor of communication, Level 1 listening, where our focus remains inward on our own thoughts and judgments. We then move up the ladder to Level 2, or active listening, where we focus on the facts and the story being told. Things get even more interesting at Level 3, where we tune into the emotions and energy behind the words. Finally, we reach Level 4, a master level of dual awareness where the listener uses their own internal reactions as a compass to navigate the shared energy of the conversation.By the end of this video, you will have a clear framework called the Ladder of Listening. This tool will help you become more flexible and conscious in your daily interactions, allowing you to choose the level of listening that best serves the person in front of you.Chapters0:00 The Power of Being Heard0:46 The Philosophy of Emergence Coaching1:34 Level 1: Internal Listening2:31 Level 2: Focused Listening3:21 Level 3: Global Listening4:22 Level 4: Masterful Dual Awareness5:42 The Ladder of Listening SummaryWelcome to @Coaching.Catalyst – we turn cutting-edge coaching research into skills you can use tomorrow.
