About this listen

The phenomenal fifth book in the Hunger Games series!

Acclaimed actor Jefferson White, who starred in Paramount Network's Yellowstone as Jimmy Hurdstrom, brings his talent to the worldwide best-selling Hunger Games series as narrator of the Sunrise on the Reaping audiobook!

When you've been set up

to lose everything you love,

what is there left to fight for?

As the day dawns on the fiftieth annual Hunger Games, fear grips the districts of Panem. This year, in honor of the Quarter Quell, twice as many tributes will be taken from their homes.

Back in District 12, Haymitch Abernathy is trying not to think too hard about his chances. All he cares about is making it through the day and being with the girl he loves.

When Haymitch's name is called, he can feel all his dreams break. He's torn from his family and his love, shuttled to the Capitol with the three other District 12 tributes: a young friend who's nearly a sister to him, a compulsive oddsmaker, and the most stuck-up girl in town. As the Games begin, Haymitch understands he's been set up to fail. But there's something in him that wants to fight . . . and have that fight reverberate far beyond the deadly arena.

Editorial Review

Cinna told me to listen to this
In 2012, my boyfriend (now husband) bought me a shirt that said Cinna told me to wear this, and I think that should tell you everything you need to know about my devotion to The Hunger Games franchise. The latest addition to the series, Sunrise on the Reaping, is something I didn’t even know I could hope for: Haymitch’s origin story. And my already high levels of anticipation for the release reached a fever-pitch when Jefferson White ( Yellowstone) was announced as the narrator, and we got to hear a sneak peek of his performance. We first met Haymitch as Katniss and Peeta’s mentor in Book 1, and since then all we could do was speculate about his own journey in the Hunger Games some 24 years before. In Sunrise on the Reaping we’ll get to meet a 16-year-old Haymitch (and perhaps the teenage versions of Katniss’s parents, Effie, and Cinna ... one can dream), and finally learn how the tenacious teen became the hardened man we all have a soft spot for. May the odds be ever in his favour. —Katie O., Audible Editor

I love suzanne’s writing, her ability to create amazing worlds, but from a biased and limited view that fits each character. The whole series is an incredible analysation of the motives and limits of a person. Jefferson white is perfect for Haymitch too, with the mannerisms and voice as he reads. Great book so far !

This book was absolutely amazing in both narration and context! The narration was so incredibly emotional throughout and really tugged at my heartstrings

Heartbreaking but brilliant

Amazing commentary on propaganda and censorship, especially how the capitol controls how the public sees the games.
Familiar side characters gave the story more depth and expanded the world building.
The parallels to Katniss and Haymitch throughout the story are touching, as well as reflecting how similar they are.
Enhanced the capitol’s cruelty, whilst highlighting the humanity of the tributes
p.s. this was the first hunger games book to make me cry

A wonderful addition to the hunger games books. I knew it was going to be sad but Jesus the author didn't pull any punches. She's a talented lady. Possibly sadistic. My heart hurts.

Absolutely amazing writing and narration! Collins did a marvelous job of telling us a story whose ending we already know—yet she still made me hope and yearn for a different one.

Understanding how Haymitch became the person we knew from the original books was such a valuable addition to the lore. It also filled in many gaps in the original story. I loved getting to see how the rebellion took decades to build, rather than being sparked by a single 16-year-old girl. In fact, she wasn’t even the first to want change, and so many lives were ruined in the process. Her success wasn’t just a result of her own actions, but the culmination of countless people fighting for years, dissatisfaction growing, and, ultimately, a lot of luck.

This book was such a powerful addition to the story. Even though I knew the ending, I still found myself hoping—for the characters, for a better outcome, for something different. I felt engaged, excited, and heartbroken the entire time. It also dove deep into so many other characters’ motivations and backstories, making the world feel richer than ever.

This has definitely became my favorite Hunger Games books!

Devastating yet insightful
