Summary

Captain Siobhan Dunmoore wanted to believe the long war against the invading Shrehari Empire had finally banished the ghosts of her past. But when her ship Iolanthe, a heavily armed man-of-war masked as a bulk freighter, finds itself in need of replenishment after a long patrol spent stalking human and alien foes, she is confronted with events eerily reminiscent of a past she thought buried. When evidence of treason and marauders bold enough to strike a Navy outpost leave her no choice, Dunmoore knows she must finish the cleanup job Fleet Headquarters ordered her to abandon years ago.

Fortunately, Iolanthe and her crew are the perfect instruments with which to dispense much-needed retribution, despite General Orders and the Fleet's bureaucracy doing their best to tie a captain's hands. With her ship taking on the guise of a privateer, she sets out on a merciless hunt to eliminate a band of soulless soldiers of fortune and teach the ghosts of her past a lesson they will never forget.

naration spoils a good book

I really enjoyed the first three books but the narration in this book sucks the life out of the story. I have reluctantly given up on the series with this narrator.

Story great but horrific narration

Gutted by this, really enjoy the story and wanted to catch up with Dunmore et al, but even tweaking the speed the narration was horrible. Really hard to hear as well as monotone and garbled.

PLEASE RE-RECORD!!!!

Terrible Narrator don’t waste a credit

Loved the first three books, the narrator brought to life a gripping and exciting story , the narrator of this one killed the story stone dead, his monotone boring voice sucked the life out of what should have been a great continuation of the story, I managed to get to the end of chapter 4, by which time I was loosing the Will to live and had to concede and throw in the towel. Such a shame for what until this book was an excellent story,

Desperately needs re-narrating

The story follows on from book 3 and is, as usual, excellently written. The narrator however is absolutely rubbish. Very little intonation, hardly any difference between character voices. He constantly pauses in strange places during conversations between characters breaking the flow of the dialogue, and there are countless speaking mistakes that have not been edited out.
This all makes this 4th instalment very hard to follow, difficult to listen to and overall saddening experience compared to the first 3.

Karen

I was really enjoying listening to this story until I downloaded book 4. The narrator was appalling, what happened to the previous narrator who brought the story alive. Also the production was very amateurist and I found it very hard to listen to. I appreciate now it is vitally important to have a good narrator tell the story. Very disappointed it spoilt a good book.

Excellent story

Narrator is so monotone I won't be getting the rest of the series. It's a shame really as I really enjoyed the characters. So let down by narrator. If it could be redone then it would shine. Sorry

what a difference a narrator makes

avoid this like the plague if you loved the first three books. they have changed narrator and in short it’s terrible and soulless. the production quality is down the toilet with frequent breathing near the microphone or the aerator moving and his clothing russling. such a shame because the first three books had depth and a narrator that brought the characters to life. if they ever get another narrator and republish then happy to try again but this new narrator should be binned.

Slooowwwww

Whilst I agree to an extent about the narration, it was the content that I found poor. I enjoyed the first 3 books, however, this one was at times a little too detailed in the 'everyday life on a starship' aspect. Whilst I agree it is good to set a scene, it could have been done in a lot fewer words. I got the impression that the author had an idea for this straightforward plot but needed to pad it out in order to convert it from a short story to a novel.
