About this listen

Sooner or later, you have to trust someone.

There are no reported outbreaks in the UK or Ireland. That's what the government broadcasted. Nilda didn't believe it. Not trusting the authorities, she, and her son, Jay, stay behind when Penrith is evacuated. After weeks of rationing, there is little food left in the small town and many other survivors competing for it. Choosing diplomacy over violence, she attempts to forge a community out of a disparate group. As zombies gather outside their walls, she realizes that they will have to seek sanctuary elsewhere. Nilda travels north into Scotland, but death follows, and she is forced to leave once more.

Joining with others who have survived the evacuation, she finds not all of them have the same motives. Some, like Tuck, Sebastian, and the Abbot of Brazely only want to help. Others, like Harper and Rob, only want to help themselves. Whilst Chester and the new Mayor of Anglesey have their own agenda, one at odds with Nilda's quest; to find a safe haven for her son.

Set in Northern England and Scotland, this novel returns to the beginning of the outbreak and features some new characters (and a few familiar ones).

Where does Unsafe Haven rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I’d put this book in my top 40%. It is nothing ground breaking but the story was good and the narrator did a fine job.

What did you like best about this story?

The story moved at the right pace and it was without any excessive story padding. The 8 hours audio book did not overstay its welcome.

But just like the other reviewer, I was also not crazy about Nilda, the main character. She constantly hovers between self-righteousness and self-pity.

Solid zombie book

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Definitely would recommend to anyone loving the apocalyptic genre. Characters re very realistic and like a good plot the fate of characters central to the story is truly unknown. It is not a good verses evil scenario but instead one which allows characters to develop and play out self interest. Has good detail but doesn't bore you with it.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I like Nilda and Jay. Mother and son. Jay is very believable and often puts his foot in it as a teenager would.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yes in parts this brought a tear to my eye.

Any additional comments?

Another good book on a great series. New female reader that does a good job of portraying a female storyline.

Same setting with new characters

This is book 4.
I have to keep on reading the rest!
Slightly confusing jumping from one survivor to another, but I soon got used to it!
If you like zombie stories, you will love this!

Great saga!

I wasn't at all sure about a change in narrator but it's worked so well. I'm really enjoying the story from a different perspective, hearing how someone else chooses to deal with the outbreak and the consequences of their decisions. The style, whilst similar in some ways to the first three books seems sometimes as if it's written by a different author. I nearly gave up on the first book. So glad I stuck with it as I'm hooked now!

Wasn't sure about a change in narrator but ended up loving it
