Summary

Act of Valor stars a group of active-duty Navy SEALs in a powerful story of contemporary global anti-terrorism. Inspired by true events, the story combines stunning combat sequences, up-to-the minute battlefield technology and heart-pumping emotion for the ultimate action adventure. Act of Valor takes listeners deep into the secretive world of the most elite, highly trained group of warriors in the modern world.

When the rescue of a kidnapped CIA operative leads to the discovery of a deadly terrorist plot against the U.S., a team of SEALs is dispatched on a worldwide manhunt. As the valiant men of Bandito Platoon race to stop a coordinated attack that could kill and wound thousands of American civilians, they must balance their commitment to country, team and their families back home. Each time they accomplish their mission, a new piece of intelligence reveals another shocking twist to the deadly terror plot, which stretches from Chechnya to the Philippines and from Ukraine to Somalia. The widening operation sends the SEALs across the globe as they track the terrorist ring to the U.S.-Mexico border, where they engage in an epic firefight with an outcome that has potentially unimaginable consequences for the future of America.

act of Medriocty

I know loads of people who think tom Clancy is action story god, but I found this uninspiring some interesting ideas and good character details (too much for my liking) probably make a good film if you just did the action bits

Good but......

I enjoyed this book mostly but there was way too much technical detail. Right down to the individual items of equipment and clothing. This went on and on and on to such an extent that began to seem like it was padding out the book. The reader was excellent tho’.

Good performance, boring story

I was happy with the readers performance, he has a good voice and was comfortable to listen to. I do wish there was a bit more intensity given to the SEALs voices particularly in the action scenes. I've read a number of biographies of former SEALs and they are all colourful characters with both good and bad traits, I found the characters in this book to be too textbook and without flaws or depth, and lacked some of the "Gung Ho" spirit and undying love for action that actual SEALs seem to possess. The story itself is predictable but passable, but I think it pales in comparison to the real stories told by actual SEALs such as in the books by Chris Kyle and Donn Mann which I found to have more intense action, humour and entertainment value than this work. Based on my knowledge I do think the author is very knowledgeable and includes lots of accurate details about the SEALs, technology and the Military/Navy which I enjoyed, and it is also clear that he has utmost respect for these heroes.

An awesome read

Would you listen to Tom Clancy Presents: Act of Valor again? Why?

Yes, I might listen to this again, but my read/listening patterns is to only listen once and move on. Still, this was a awesome book and I would recommend it to anyone who likes action, with a military theme, a strong sense of love for defending principle, true friendship and country. A very patriotic work that is not cheesy. One thing that is important to me in a story is strong character development. This book has that which creates a strong foundation for everything else.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Tom Clancy Presents: Act of Valor?

Oh, the ending. There may be tears.

Which scene was your favorite?

The boat scene.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Same as the title, (which is what they did for the movie).

Any additional comments?

If this kind of book is your thing, I doubt you will be disappointed.

Intricately connected, global reaching inside look

The quick moving book was well written, performed, and built connections between all of the points on the globe in a smooth and interesting way. The imagery was vivid and clear, opening up possible situations that made sense and colored the way I know look at reports on activities involving SEAL teams.

Enough, but not too much, of the political overhead that shaped and continues to shape Special Operations was given to flavor the reasoning for decisions that were rolled downhill.

Brotherly comradery was clearly evident and the feelings they had for each other drew you into their inner circle, making you feel like you were sitting around the campfire with them.

I look forward to seeing the movie after listening to the book.

Too Short

Any additional comments?

Story was so well written and captivating, that when it was over I was disappointed that there wasn't another two - three hours of listening time.

Well worth the time!

Would you listen to Tom Clancy Presents: Act of Valor again? Why?

Yes, Excellent voice of reader, very emotional story.

What other book might you compare Tom Clancy Presents: Act of Valor to and why?

Clear and Present Danger. Similar characters.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I would have liked to, but I listened over several days. Next long driving trip I will listen again.

Any additional comments?

The story seems real. Things don't always work out according to plan, just like real life.
There were a few parts of the story that I wished were more clear, like where did the shooters come from in the Dr. rescue and why Seals shooting at a pick-up did not make the pick-up stop, crash or kill the driver?? Just some loose ends here and there.

too, too trite

I have complex feelings about Tom Clancy. I thought his first five or so books were wonderful. The next few laughable. The last few great entertainment, particularly as to the action scenes. This one is just too trite. Too much like thousands of other jingoistic, US all good, SEALs all good and near superhuman, the wives all brilliant and beautiful with great careers until they become housewives after getting married, volumes. Like a pulp Western I suppose. Telegraphs the outcome, to the extent is any different than it would ever be in any similar story, way ahead of time.

That said, the action scenes are great. Very compelling, even if the characters are super human. And the actual prose is not bad at all. I thought the narrator was suitably manly and serious. Really quite good.

So it is not horrible escapist literature, just way more predictable than even most of the genre.

As usual, book is better than movie!

What made the experience of listening to Tom Clancy Presents: Act of Valor the most enjoyable?

Because of my profession, I truly enjoyed being able to identify with the way of life depicted in the story.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Tom Clancy Presents: Act of Valor?

The sacrifice made by one to save many.

Which scene was your favorite?

Gunboat reception from the river of the cartel pursuers.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The wife's point of view during the funeral.

Any additional comments?

I wish the movie incorporated all the intricacies of the book - the public doesn't understand what it is that these heroes do and the price paid.

Give me a sec while I dry my eyes.....

Would you listen to Tom Clancy Presents: Act of Valor again? Why?

Wow~ I would have to say yes, but this is one very intense story...at least for me it was. Yes, I am a girl...yeah, girls are a little more emotional, but even manly men are allowed to get teary eyed over the conclusion of this one.

What did you like best about this story?

What can I say, it's an intriguing & compeling story. The writing & narraration is so well done that you feel like you are right there living it or that you are at least being told the story by someone who actually experienced a real situation. It doesn't really have that

Which character – as performed by Steven Weber – was your favorite?

The narration was so amazing, but I have to say... holy moly, there is one scene with the Dr. when she(he) says

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I had planned to, but I just couldn't do it....it was just too intense. I had to take 2 seperate breaks which is very unlike me to be honest. I usually like to just plow through from start to finish.... however, it is now 4:30 a.m. because once I got back into it I couldn't turn it off because it got so intense. Then, I had to write this review while it was still fresh in my thoughts....not that I will be forgetting this one any time soon.

Any additional comments?

This story is about the ugly up-close and personal side of terrorism. But it is truely about bravery, patriotism, honor, loyalty, and the ultimate sacrifice.
I highly recommend this audiobook~
Happy listening~
