On a stifling afternoon at police HQ in Algiers, Superintendent Taleb, coasting towards retirement, with not even an air-conditioned office to show for his long years of service, is handed a ticking time bomb of a case that will take him deep into Algeria's troubled past and its fraught relationship with France.
To his dismay, he is assigned to work with Agent Hidouchi, an intimidating representative of the country's feared secret service, who makes it clear she intends to call the shots. They are instructed to pursue a former agent, now on the run after 20 years in prison for his part in a high-level corruption scandal. But their search will lead them inexorably towards a greater mystery, surrounding a murder that took place in Paris more than 50 years ago.
Uncovering the truth may be his responsibility, but Taleb is well aware that no one in Algeria wants to be reminded of the dark deeds carried out in the struggle for independence - or in the violence that has racked the nation since. Before long, he will face a choice he has long sought to avoid, between self-preservation and doing the right thing.
And, ultimately, the choice may not even be his to make.

Great story shame about the narration
I love Robert Goddard books, the research he does is brilliant. This story has a historical content was truly amazing and made me want to read further about the events that took place in the book. The Algerian French situation during the late 1800s through to present day was thoroughly researched by RG. This was brought to life throughout the book and is well worth a read. However, I have always enjoyed the narration of the Robert Goddard audiobooks, especial John Telfer and Michael Kitchen, with the exception of this one. The narrator is so slow and drawn out it became uncomfortable to listen to. The accents are all over the place and inconsistent. The English characters sounded non-English and the non-English characters with the exception of maybe one or two sounded English. I tried speeding the narration up to 1.25 which did make some difference but then I had to turn it back to listen to the second narrator, John Hopkins, who by the way, read perfect. If John Hopkins read the English parts and Philip Arditti concentrated on the Algerian and French characters it would have worked well as he does have a great voice, but wrongly cast in my humble opinion.

Great characters, insightful and captivating
I really loved this book. The storyline was excellent and the characters were well developed and interesting. I am intrigued to know if there will be a sequel?

a gripping story
A thrilling story based on factual events from the post-colonial period in Algiera and France, with sub-plot connected to Britain. The lead characters were vividly drawn into a complex and intriguing plot which held my attention throughout. I was sorry when it ended. As well as being a riveting read the book enlightened me on a shameful period in France's history and its consequences for Algieria.

A book full to the brim with info!
I really enjoyed this twisty turny thriller. Three countries (1 stuck in the middle of) two back bitey, treacherous secret agencies. Death and mayhem ensues!

enlightening
I had no knowledge of the troubles in Algeria this was such an interesting story.Not typical Robert Goddard but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Stick with it
I often move in if a book fails to grab me in 20 mins but this meandered through to a decent story eventually. The narrator is a little ponderous but this aside I would recommend this book

Brilliant
One of the best pieces of fiction I have listened too in ages. Perhaps because it is based on historical facts I found it far more credible and interesting than most of the novels in the genre. Combined with the excellent proffessional narration makes it one of my favourite books in recent years.

Fascinating story…
I knew nothing much about the Algerian French conflict and found this very interesting. Once again Goddard excels at keeping you guessing. Exciting ending and every tied off at the end.

Entertaining and informative.
Unlike other reviewers, I think this is one of Goddard's best novels and I had no issues with the narration. It's an entertaining story and like many of Goddard's novels, drives you to further research of historical events.
