Summary

In Elena's world words have power over life and death - but none more so than hers.

As the daughter of shopkeepers, Elena has always known that the mysteries of reading and writing are closed to her. Only the mageborn can risk harnessing the power unleashed from putting pen to paper. Until Elena discovers an impossible new ability and joins the elite ranks of the mages.

But with the kingdom at war, the authorities can't agree if Elena is an asset, or a threat they need to eliminate. Thrust into the unknown world of the Royal Academy without friends or experience, Elena will need all of her wits, strength, and new power to carve a place for herself.

Except as the threats to both Elena and the kingdom mount, wits and strength won't be enough. Elena will have to turn to new friends and an enigmatic prince to unlock the mysterious potential of her words - because both her life and her people depend on her becoming stronger than she ever dreamed possible.

Best mage book I have read in years.

Such a well written book. I found myself completely submerged in the world the author had created. Puzzles, mysteries, back to back adventures, ethics, politics and not to forget love. All written in a spell binding way. Goodness I hope she writes more in this series. I feel nearLy heart broken that it has ended. This would make an excellent movie. I will keep my fingers crossed for that!

thoroughly enjoyed!

I find it hard to sink my teeth into an audiobook, especially as I first found the narrator's accent a little distracting. About halfway into the first book it no longer distracted me and I came to really appreciate the energy and talent she puts into the different voices. The story itself caught me at about the same time. I came to really like Elena and her group of friends as well as finding the world building and form of magic to be pretty cool. Definitely recommend!

A captivating series

Well-written, with plenty of teenage angst, magic, and nice twist. I understand there's a fifth book in the series, and I'd like to see what our Prince and Spoken Mage do to continue changing their world for the better.

watch this writer for the future

juvenile. if this writer matures and deepens (and has a very good mentor) there is potential. this series is immature and shallow with the usual expectations and mistakes of a young writer. action is limited, heroine is stereotypical, interactions are shallow. but the world creating has potential, and plot development could grow. i will watch this writer for futute growth

Rough ride for me.

I enjoyed the magical aspects, court intrigue and redeeming characters but if I ever putmyself through a Princess Bride type book again I hope they commit me. Ladies who wrote such raving reviews are you still pining for your prince or knight. The girl was just so bad a person. I mean really her way or the highway and lord knows she knew better than everyone else. Quite honestly the king or queen would have threatened her family to make her work for the kingdom. Just made me want to get sick at her whole attitude. Everyone else around her top notch. I'm still just amazed at how many reviewers just gushed over this romance novel. If you got through this far with my review thank you and take care.

It could be worse, but maybe is just not for me

I got hooked into the world idea of having magic into written words, and how the upper class (the mages) would keep the knowledge to read and write only to themselves. But the story does not really explore the social parts of it. It's there but the focus on romance and teenager struggles is way stronger. I found myself listening at super high speeds and not bothering if minutes goes past without me paying attention. Never felt like I've lost any important part of the story.

It ends up being really shallow, and the opportunity to explore and critique social inequalities is transformed into a constant race to get the approval of the oppressors. The bigger picture of war and other kingdoms that could make it interesting, is only explored on the final book, where the world and its politics unfold so fast that it barely makes sense.

The plot is weak, and full of things that wouldn't make sense. And the cliché of dumping explanations to cover plot holes on the last chapter is there. And a lot of possibly interesting things to explore are left aside, or just barely exposed in the last book.

Also I feel strange about the romantic relationships presented here... It's the common hero saves princess for most of the time. Feels shallow again.

There's a lot more that I could complain about the books. But just to say something good: I liked the fights, and interesting ways of using their powers into combat.

It's not a horrible book if you're just looking for the mindless romance and teenager angst kind of book, but it's not really good at that either.

Wonderfully Written and Delivered!!!

I loved how the Story gripped me and made me feel like I was watching everything instead of just listening to someone read the words from a book! This is exactly what I want in a book!!!
