There’s only one rule in the world I come from. Keep our existence a secret. Period. The day my sister broke that rule one too many times, I knew there would be consequences. I expected us to be sent to one of those schools for “troubled” kids - and maybe Daizlei Academy was, in a way. But really, it was far more complicated than that. You see, I thought that world had forgotten me. Forgotten us. For years we were left alone, and one day...we weren’t. It was only when I got there that I remembered the second rule: Trust no one.

I am Levy Michaels. Once my kind were the hunters - now we are the hunted. Supernaturals are out of the closet but I have to stay hidden because of the type of magic I possess. I’m a legacy. It sounds like the title should come with reverence, a trust fund, or at the very least a cool backstory - instead it comes with a death sentence. I have to hide in plain sight and pretend to be just human. I’m pretty good at it.

My best friend is a cat who likes pizza, and a “night out” includes hand delivering mysterious packages to the local “coven” of small business owners who repeatedly invite me to their meetings - clothing optional. Best mage book I have read in years.
Such a well written book. I found myself completely submerged in the world the author had created. Puzzles, mysteries, back to back adventures, ethics, politics and not to forget love. All written in a spell binding way. Goodness I hope she writes more in this series. I feel nearLy heart broken that it has ended. This would make an excellent movie. I will keep my fingers crossed for that!

Loved This Series!
Shiromi Arserio really brings these characters and the story vividly to life. I've enjoyed every minute of these books, and I can't wait to listen all over again. So much more than a love story (though the love story is very sweet), the characters are rich and the story is utterly engaging. Can't wait for more by this author

Rough ride for me.
I enjoyed the magical aspects, court intrigue and redeeming characters but if I ever putmyself through a Princess Bride type book again I hope they commit me. Ladies who wrote such raving reviews are you still pining for your prince or knight. The girl was just so bad a person. I mean really her way or the highway and lord knows she knew better than everyone else. Quite honestly the king or queen would have threatened her family to make her work for the kingdom. Just made me want to get sick at her whole attitude. Everyone else around her top notch. I'm still just amazed at how many reviewers just gushed over this romance novel. If you got through this far with my review thank you and take care.

juvenile. if this writer matures and deepens (and has a very good mentor) there is potential. this series is immature and shallow with the usual expectations and mistakes of a young writer. action is limited, heroine is stereotypical, interactions are shallow. but the world creating has potential, and plot development could grow. i will watch this writer for futute growth

Interesting premise, boring execution
The concept of written words unleashing magic is very interesting. The premise is a new spin on knowledge being power that I hadn't heard before, and found quite enjoyable. That said, this book is written as though all information is on a need to know basis, and the reader doesn't need to know. There is very, very little world building so things that should hit with an emotional punch fall flat. Pair that with the fact that all of the characters have communication skills on part with an angry pigeon and the book is a bit of a slog. Swap out this quartet for Proctor of the Small by Tamara Pierce to get a very similar story and a more enjoyable read.

Long but entertaining
Elena is born into a common, non-mage family. When she develops mage skills, she is whisked away to the city for trial's and she must fight for her life
Normally, only the mage-born have magical power, so when Elena is discovered with unusual abilities she is both feared and looked at like a test lab rat.
While the kingdoms are at war, everyone looks to use Elena is an asset to their arsenal, or a threat they need to eliminate. Trying to understand the snobbery of the upper class, the politics of her new world, Elena struggles to find her own way while still being true to herself.
I have to say...I nearly gave up during the first 3 books as I found the story dragged. Book 4 makes much more sense in the end and the 4th is full of excitement while Elena comes into her own.

thoroughly enjoyed!
I find it hard to sink my teeth into an audiobook, especially as I first found the narrator's accent a little distracting. About halfway into the first book it no longer distracted me and I came to really appreciate the energy and talent she puts into the different voices. The story itself caught me at about the same time. I came to really like Elena and her group of friends as well as finding the world building and form of magic to be pretty cool. Definitely recommend!

Antagonist Hell
Seeing a massive pattern of late. Every book is riddled with overdone antagonists.
Put simply, you cant metaphorically get half a mile into the book before people are being mean/rude/cruel for no logical reason. It doesnt help the story, it is not needed within the story aside from authors who Think there must be unneeded angry/mean/hateful characters. This book is certainly no different.
As a test I hit skip to next chapter every time someone was rude/cruel for no reason. I have not made it through a single chapter yet. I'm at chapter 9 and started less than an hour ago, may actually make it through this chapter.
Mean/rude/angry characters aplenty, ruining the story, ruining the tale.
You can make your own world... and yet you choose to fill it with TONS of hateful buffoons and only 1 or two "good" characters? We need a new era of authors, tired of this beyond repeated trope.
