Summary
The first three interconnected stand-alone fairy tale retellings from the Four Kingdoms series
Book 1 - The Princess Companion: A Retelling of The Princess and the Pea: This retelling of the classic fairy tale The Princess and the Pea reimagines the risks and rewards that come when one royal family goes searching for a true princess.
Book 2 - The Princess Fugitive: A Reimagining of Little Red Riding Hood: In this reimagining of the classic fairy tale Little Red Riding Hood, the girl in the red hood has been swallowed up by the wolf and must decide if she's willing to fight for her freedom, no matter the cost.
Novella 2.5 - Happily Ever Afters: A Reimagining of Snow White and Rose Red: Sarah and Evelyn have already risked everything to help Ava win a crown. But they soon learn that a coronation is a beginning, not an ending. Not everyone in Rangmere is happy to see the young queen on the throne, and intrigue and danger lurk all around.
The cousins find themselves fighting not only for their new kingdom but also for their own survival in the royal court. When a new threat emerges, the two girls must defeat it to both save the crown and secure their own happily-ever-afters.

the first book was great I hung on every word. the 2nd book took me a little longer since the character was from the first book and she wanst my favorite (you'll understand if you read this).
but it hooked me. the reader did an amazing job with changing her voice for each character.

Good retelling of classics
The stories were interesting and I liked how they tied together. The last book seemed a little rushed when compared to the first two but it wasn’t terrible. My only critique would be the narrator. She doesn’t have enough voice variation between characters and it is often hard to keep up with who is talking.

Truly wonderful fairytale retellings
I absolutely love the series and as soon as I'm done with this message will be moving on to the next set of books. The love between friends and companions is incredible. It made me feel like I was falling in love all over again. The books just flow right into each other progressing the story deeper and deeper. Truly well done.

Skillful writing, great reworking of fairytales
The Princess Companion: I'm deeply impressed with Melanie Cellier's ability to tell a story. I only discovered her this year. She is an expert at plotting and character development. She is able to draw nuanced characters in shorter works of fiction. The Queen, for instance...very compelling at times, then greatly obtuse at others, and with a subtle but crucial role in the plot. Before I posted this review, I skimmed other reviews and was astounded by some of the dismissive comments. It was as if we were reading an entirely different book. All in all, I very much loved the retelling of the Princess and the Pea in a clever and compelling manner. Just a great story, perfect for escaping our own troubled world. I really loved the main character. Wonderful writing.
The Princess Fugitive: It opened with a villain from the prior book, so I said to myself, this will be quite a journey...and it was. Cellier is a gifted writer, with efficient, clever plots, but especially with the knack for spinning a good yarn! I do recommend this volume in The Four Kingdoms.
Happily Ever Afters: My expectations were sky high after the first two but this is a bit of a let down, far too short. It was hard to make the connection to Snow White and Rose Red. It was still of interest, but not up to the standard of The Four Kingdoms, books 1 and 2. But, I admit I didn't realize this was ".5" book until now, so I don't really count it in reviewing the series, which is superb. My rating stars are for the "boxed" set as a whole.
I thought very highly of the narrator.

Different narraters would be beneficial
I am loving these series! I started to read the third box set, Beyond the Four Kingdoms first. After the twins I came back to start from the beginning. Having the same narrator to narrate all of the princesses and other main female characters does make listening to the books loose some luster than having an indistinguishable new voice play the new point of view.

Nice to listen to while grading papers.
I enjoyed this twist on known fairy tales. It was a nice change of pace. This was worth the credit, especially since it was three stories at a time.
