About this listen

Starting a new life in Snowdonia was always DI Ruth Hunter's dream. Until a twisted killer turned it into her worst nightmare.

Detective Inspector Ruth Hunter lives with the pain of her partner’s mysterious and unsolved disappearance. About to hit 50, the veteran police officer trades in the crime-ridden streets of London for a more peaceful life in rural North Wales. But Ruth has barely settled into her new position in North Wales Police, when the body of a brutally murdered woman is discovered...with strange symbols carved into her skin. Teaming up with an obstinate deputy, Ruth struggles to eliminate anyone from a long line of suspects. When another slain victim is discovered with the same cryptic markings, she’s forced to re-think the investigation.

Has Ruth got what it takes to solve the case before the murderer attacks again?

The Snowdonia Killings is the first book in the DI Ruth Hunter Crime Thriller series and set against the majestic backdrop of Snowdonia, a timeless land of Arthurian legend, folklore, and myth. If you like dark police procedurals, psychologically complex characters, and shocking twists, then you’ll love Simon McCleave’s pulse-pounding debut novel.

As a massive crime fiction fan from North Wales, I have been waiting for a North Wales-based crime novel for a long time. Reading the description, I was excited to try this book.

But why on earth has a narrator who clearly doesn’t speak Welsh been chosen? Obviously the book isn’t in wealth, but someone with a least, a basic understanding of Welsh pronunciation. she sounds like a good narrator in general, but this is unacceptable and quite frankly disrespectful towards the Welsh language. Also, why are racist terms being beeped out? if they are written in the book, they need to be said.

Refreshing premise, but terrible choice of narrator

every time the reader said Doughy instead of Dewi I winced. I had to stop well before it got going

Try and pronounce the names correctly!

good crime romp but a 1st language Welsh speaker with a North walean accent would have improved this audiobook considerably. The Welsh pronunciations and accents let it down

Good story let down by the narrator

As a resident of N Wales I was embarrassed by the narrator’s attempts to portray the way people in Wales speak. I often found myself cringing and when she did sound Welsh it was the accent of S rather than N Wales. An embarrassment and quite frankly an insult to the Principality; however we are of course used to it and so the chips on our shoulders fester forever deeply. To be fair her attempts at a cockney accent were equally as disastrous. Of course Londoners couldn’t give a toss.
Whenever I stopped fulminating and was able to listen to the story I was drawn along. Both the main characters had so many psychological hang ups, it was surprising they had time to concentrate on their day jobs. Some of the so called suspects were obviously physically and/ or mentally incapable of doing the dastardly deed. A lot of our heroe/heroine’s angst no doubt tells us lots about the author and his hang ups; no doubt he possesses an addictive personality. I do hope he feels better after his catharsis, I am not sure I do.
However I did finish the book and in spite of finding none of the characters credible was rather disappointed when the story ended.

Story spoilt by embarrassing narrator

Too obvious. Knew who did it from to go get, more or less. Not a good writer or a good narrator. Some of the characterisations were laughable. Don't waste a credit on this rubbish. To be honest I kept going to sleep and there was no need to recap. Poor.
