Summary

Fizzing with her trademark energy, hilarity and charm, Countryfile's Anita Rani reads her incredible first memoir, The Right Sort of Girl.

'I'm a girl and northern and brown, didn't you know? A triple threat!'

Trying to navigate her Indian world at home and the British world outside her front door, Anita Rani was a girl who didn't fit in anywhere. She was always destined to stand out: from playing Mary in her otherwise all white nursery nativity to growing up in eighties Yorkshire with her Punjabi family, spending evenings in the factory her parents owned whilst trying to figure out how best to get rid of hair that seemed to be growing EVERYWHERE.

Anita shares the lessons she wishes her younger self could have known: 'Freedom is Complicated', 'You Will Fall in Love and Be Loved' and, most importantly, 'Your Anger is Legitimate'. How did she manage to become the powerhouse she is, whilst battling against being too white inside her home and too brown outside of it?

This story of a second-generation British Indian woman up north is also a tale of tenacity and a life lived with positivity and humour. If you have ever felt alone, different, or just not the right sort of girl, this is the book for you.

Overly oratorical and repetitive in places but a great listen nonetheless

I found the style difficult at times and was frustrated as it tended to get in the way of the narrative. However, having said that, it was engaging and interesting and powerful.

Loved this

Brave and honest. Great presenter and wonderful to get some back story. How I long for the day when we see the person without the colour, gender, ability, religion etc etc. Enjoy 👍

An incredible read!

Rani has eloquently written about many similar and different experiences of growing up in Britain that have opened up my mind.

Essential Reading

Great Read (Audible?). Essential reading for everyone including older white British men who thought they knew it all. Come from the same area (remember most of the Bradford in the book, and thought I was educated enough to know better. Searingly honest but also great moments of fun. Anita should be really proud of this book and all her hard work. Brilliant

A story told with passion and emotion

Well written with both passion and compassion. Anita is an excellent presenter as she is always well prepared, observant and presents with enthusiasm and outstanding personality. It was a definite bonus that she read this book herself. I found it a compelling listen.

Fascinating memoir, beautifully written and expertly narrated

I don’t watch much telly so I only vaguely knew who Anita Rani was. Still something drew me to this book, and I’m so glad I bought it. It’s one of the best memoirs I’ve ever read or listened to. Despite the fact that I’m neither British nor Indian, I recognised enough from my own teenage years to feel a connection. More importantly, I learnt so much about being different, finding yourself on the outside and how to deal with that. I laughed a lot, I learnt loads, i was horrified in places and I shed a few tears as well. What more could anyone want from a book?
As a narrator Anita Rani is sublime. She has a beautiful voice, very easy to listen to.
I will be recommending this book to anyone who who’d care to listen.
