About this listen

Andrew Hamilton thought he had life sorted: beautiful fiancée, a popular pizza restaurant, two beloved dogs and a thriving side business supplying massive quantities of magic mushrooms and LSD to eager Sydneysiders.

Then one night police raided his Surry Hills home and it all came crashing down. Andrew's predicament didn't sink in at first, mainly because he was on a three-day cocaine bender and just wanted to sleep it off. When he was transferred to Parklea Correctional Centre, his prison-inspired existential dilemma began.

The Profound Benefits of a Stint in Prison is a sometimes confronting, more often hilarious insider's view to life inside. Andrew left prison a changed man, determined to turn his life around. This is the story of what happens when max denial collides with the reality of max security.

I first became aware of Andrew "Hammo" Hamilton from viral YeahMad clips a few years back. Recently on his new YT channel (OG Crew) he mentioned his book so I searched for it on here.

It's narrated by Hammo as you would expect giving this a more personal feel.

This isn't a comedy book, although there is humour and humourous moments in it. It's not a story of a harrowing prison experience which will make you fear prison either. It's more of an honest telling of how he began dealing, got busted and ended up doing a stint inside. When inside he got the idea of Stand-up comedy and pursued it on the outside.

Hammo doesn't try to make out his prison experience is the typical one. Each prisoner has their own experience. This isn't a book about prison life so if that's what you're after, then this isn't for you. If you know of Hammo, heard him mention he was in prison and want to know a bit more about him then go ahead take a listen.

An open and honest account of why Hammo ended up inside and what he learnt from it.

I didn’t know what to expect from the book, I had seen it plugged a lot on the YouTube videos and so decided to give it a go. I’m glad I did. It was a great book and I am really happy how comedy helped turn his life around. I wish him and his family all the best for the future.

Incredible story of how Andrew turned his life around.

The most joy was found in the simplest pleasures of the most mundane days. I felt a little like I could have easily been in that position - certainly in my 20s. And, I enjoyed the perspective and the fact it wasn’t overly dramatised - quite the opposite. The comedy was in the dull moments more than anything. Definitely worth the listen and well narrated by the author.

Hammo is really likeable and I went away feeling like I gain something
