Such a shame. It has an Ok story. It’s not great. A little repetitive and long winded but JRT the narrator has a wonderful voice and does a good ‘Poirot’

This was my first Sophie Hannah book but I won't be buying any more. In the beginning I was enjoying it, mainly because JRT is such a good reader and I became interested in the characters. But it is far too long, one quarter would have been enough! About halfway through I lost the thread and realised I had stopped listening. I left it for a while but when I went back I had no idea who anybody was and couldn't bear the thought of starting from scratch just to catch up! And I realised I didn't care either, which is the perfect sign of a boring book. Well, at least I tried it.

Poirot's style has disappeared in this book; questions repeated endlessly over and over again, an obvious ending, whilst at the same time I'm still unsure what the motive for the murder was. This book left me feeling like I wanted to go to sleep towards the end. I can't remember the last time I had to skip back in a book to re-read the motive for a murder and still not be sure whether it is one. Sorry SH, I loved the first 2, but this one was extremely lack-luster.

The author has an impressive ability to write tedious characters realistically and at length, and I was ready to kill them all by the time Poirot assembles them in one room for the convoluted resolution. While the "hook" into the story is interesting and very "Christie", the book doesn't contain the occasional red herring so much as a enormous amount of dead carp.

BUT, the narrator is bloody marvellous. I sometimes forgot that it's not a full cast radio adaptation. I'd be tempted to give another book in the series a go, just because he elevates the material so much it often becomes enjoyable.

Firstly, the narration in this novel is as excellent as the first two Sophie Hannah Poirot novels. Julian Rhind-Tutt is worthy of the task and voices all characters brilliantly, especially the great Belgian sleuth. This third novel more directly involves Poirot in its telling and in voice which is greatly appreciated. Edward Catchpool's role is on more of an equal power with Hercule Poirot's in the overall relating of the action, and the interaction of the two main protagonists is now seamless. The plot is a devilishly created one but it's presented in a such a precise manner as to make you feel much as you could with the great Dame herself: how did l not see that? Hannah has gotten a real grasp on the great fictional detective, his mannerisms and oddity of speech, and goes from strength to strength as far as l am concerned. l intend now immediately to listen to the latest installment which I'd already pre-ordered. Anyone who truly appreciates the Empress of Crime should enjoy each and every new installment brought to the Christie legacy by Sophie Hannah.
