About this listen

When the body of Thomas Magner’s business partner is found dead in his car on the outskirts of Anstruther, all evidence points to suicide. And Magner himself, a wealthy property developer, is currently under investigation for a series of alleged rapes from thirty years ago.

In total fifteen women are prepared to go to court to testify against Magner but one by one they inexplicably withdraw their complaints until only five remain. With the CPS now reconsidering its case, one of Magner’s accusers is killed in a hit-and-run – and the abandoned car is found to be registered to one T Magner.

DCI Andy Gilchrist is assigned to the hit-and-run case and soon discovers that Magner’s murky past is very much seeping into the present. How did he acquire his wealth? How his first wife die? And why did his business partner commit suicide?

And was Magner a serial rapist in his youth? Or was he something far worse?

Praise for T.F. Muir:

‘Rebus did it for Edinburgh. Laidlaw did it for Glasgow. Gilchrist might just be the bloke to put St Andrews on the crime fiction map.’ Daily Record

‘A bright new recruit to the swelling army of Scots crime writers.’ Quintin Jardine

‘Gripping and grisly, with plenty of twists and turns that race along with black humour.’ Craig Robertson

‘Gilchrist is intriguing, bleak and vulnerable… if I were living in St Andrews I’d sleep with the lights on.’ Anna Smith©2014 T.F. Muir

D.I. Gilchrist is a very likeable character and doesn't have a drinking problem so the reader doesn't have to spend ages sludging through endless diversions about his personal life. This is a well-written and fast paced investigation that will keep your interest from start to finish. It all starts when a family man is found dead in his car - apparently a suicide which would seem to be confirmed when the slaughter of the man's family is discovered a little later. The brutal killing of his wife and other details of the man's death contradict this hypothesis and Gilchrist and his team set out to find the culprit. The narrator is excellent.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

That would depend on the friend and if they liked to be irritated by a storyline that verged on ridiculous.

Would you ever listen to anything by T. F. Muir again?

Doubt it.

What didn’t you like about David Monteath’s performance?

I think he struggled to make the characters believable but a valiant effort in trying to bring life in to a murderous plot that was so easy to predict what was going to happen next with laughable insubordination by police staff and an unbelievable character in DI Gilchrist...

If this book were a film would you go see it?

er......no

Any additional comments?

I read (listen) to a huge amount of crime novels; they are my favourite genre. However this plot was absurd verging on barking mad. Mad murderous perverts and well dressed lunatics with Mercedes driving DI and an insecure gun-toting ex-crime family colleague with a deaf son. The plot was incredibly well signposted to a point where I was actually hoping I was going to be wrong in my prediction of 'what's going to happen next' . On a brighter note it did make me laugh out loud at one point; shame is I can't remember that specific moment.

Grrr.

DCI Andy Gilcrist is to me the most incompetent detective I have come across. In this book he manages to get his colleague killed because of a lack of preparation. He goes after armed criminals with absolutely no body armour or weapons himself. When he gets the chance to get hold of a weapon, he leaves it on the floor. He ties the criminal up in such a way that he can escape and pick up the weapons and go after him again. The only reason DCI Andy Gilchrist survived his because of sheer luck and chance. His incompetence is only to keep the narrative running longer.

Most incompetent detective in the Scottish police.

It was a good story until the end, when it all got a bit daft.

I found myself wanting them all to get killed, as it would have served them right for being so annoying annoying

Just got silly

The story line works on the basis that he has this brilliant intuition. But is also extremely stupid and reckless and responsible for catastrophic outcomes because of his stupidity. Sack him

His stupidity makes me want him sacked
