About this listen

How well do you know the person you love?

A woman's body is washed up on the rocks by the castle ruins in St Andrews with evidence of strangulation, and no ID. Two days into the case, a call from another woman claiming to be the victim's friend could be DCI Andy Gilchrist's first solid lead. But when she fails to turn up for an interview, Gilchrist fears the worst. The next day, they find her battered body.

Gilchrist's focus centres on his prime suspect, a local handyman with the reputation of being a ladies' man, who seems to have no history beyond three years - the length of time he's been living in the East Neuk. But before Gilchrist can bring him in for questioning, he vanishes.

Would you trust the person you love with your life? If you do, they might just take it.

'Gripping and grisly, with plenty of twists and turns that race along with black humour.' Craig Robertson

'Muir exposes the dark underbelly of a well-heeled university town with knuckle-gnawing tension, whipcrack plot twists and grisly set-pieces shot through with black humour.' Neil Broadfoot

Critic reviews

DCI Gilchrist is a thoughtful, believable character, leading a well-rounded team. Muir knows what he's about . . . A truly gripping read, with all the makings of a classic series
Rebus did it for Edinburgh. Laidlaw did it for Glasgow. Gilchrist might just be the bloke to put St Andrews on the crime fiction map
A bright new recruit to the swelling army of Scots crime writers
Gripping and grisly, with plenty of twists and turns that race along with black humour
Gilchrist is intriguing, bleak and vulnerable . . . if I were living in St Andrews I'd sleep with the lights on
St Andrews is a hotbed of murder, keeping DCI Andy Gilchrist busy in this tartan noir series. Gripping!

I have now listened to, and enjoyed all the books in the series. This is far better than the last two books with the Meating Room being quite gory.

The story got and kept my attention from the start full of twists, mystery and action.

This time Gilchrist has a new woman boss(Smiler) and once again as in most of the female characters in Muir's books she is very abrasive. Needless to say as with his previous boss (now thankfully retired) Smiler gives him a very hard time, and I thought here we go again but
surprisingly she comes good in the end and seems to appreciates that despite his maverick ways Gilchrist is an asset.

Jessie's character is progressing she's going from strength to strength and you begin to understand her and sympathise with her plight, a deaf son and disreputable family.

Another excellent narration by David Monteath. Thoroughly recommended.

This was my first introduction to this author and I was quite taken aback by how good this book was. I’m an avid crime drama watcher and after months of listening to freebies on here I decided to use one of my stored up credits to purchase this book. The story, characters and narration were all great, really had me hooked. I was delighted to see there were many more books so will happily use my credits to start this series from the beginning.

UPDATE
I have now read the entire serious, used up all my credits and bought more so I could carry on listening! I’ve even read the 2 released this month and now feel a sense of loss that Gilchrist and Jessie will no longer be a daily routine in my life. I can’t recommend these books highly enough although a word of warning... if children are around put your headphones in! Certainly not for the feint hearted 😱

Enjoyed all the DCI Gilchrist stories so far, and this one is no different. Based in St. Andrews, this time Andy Gilchrist gets to travel father afield as part of his investigation into a young woman's death. Good plot and characters. Recommend to all who enjoy detective books and Scotland!

Another good Gilchrist story
