Intriguing story, but one hell of a gut punch end

The story was actually really compelling, with a grieving main character. Her niece seems off from the very start but you can't quite work out in what way. The investigation is good but the 'red herring' was just very annoying and predictable. Main issue is the gut punch end that left a horrible feeling in my stomach for days after.

Underwhelming

The story is confusing and in the end an anti climax. Not as good as his previous novels

Loved it

I loved this book, I loved that it intertwined with his previous work. It was intelligent and gripping until the end.

Absolutely brilliant book....as good as the silent patient. I really enjoyed this book and can’t wait to read more from Alex Michaelides.

Couldn’t put it down!

I was reticent to read The Maidens as The Silent Patient was so amazing I didn’t think a second book could measure up - It does and then some!! Can’t wait for the next one, such original, intelligent, thrilling narrative with deep psychological insight, brilliant!

Great start, then downhill

The overall plot was clever but it went downhill about half way through - could have been fleshed out much more compellingly as the main character is interesting, but instead it became hyperbolic and gratuitous and rushed. Good performances though. Not a bad listen but not like the silent patient

It was a bit of a slog and too academic

I absolutely loved Michaelides’ first book, but this one just doesn’t come close. I'm not sure if it is the narration or the excessive explanations of Greek mythology and psychology, but the book felt too academic in places. I fell asleep during chapters (listening at night), and despite that, I could still follow the story. Perhaps it was too long. The narration was a bit monotone, and I didn’t quite understand the purpose of the male character’s reminiscence. I get that it was supposedly giving us insight into his motives, but it felt jarring and not quite attached to the story, as if it was attempted to be tacked on but failed to stick. Then, there was reading out all that stuff in Greek, which wasn’t necessary. The reader could have been informed that it was something in Greek, instead of having to listen to a minute of Greek that means nothing unless you understand the language. Then the ending was just slightly a bit unbelievable. So, overall, the story was too long with too much detail and a somewhat monotone narration. It wasn’t bad, but I also don’t feel enthused about it.

Greek mythology, psychology, and murder.

I was in a second-hand shop, browsing through the books, when I recognized the writer's name as I had read and greatly enjoyed 'The Silent Patient.'

Discovering the Easter egg of 'The Silent Patient' alone was a great find.

The plot of 'Maidens' was unexpected and quite interesting. If you enjoy Greek mythology, psychology, and murder mysteries, you will certainly enjoy it.
