It's always awkward when 5,000 kronor goes missing. When it happens at a certain grotty hotel in South Stockholm, it's particularly awkward because the money belongs to the hitman currently staying in room seven. Per Persson, the hotel receptionist, just wants to mind his own business and, preferably, not get murdered. Johanna Kjellander, temporarily resident in room eight, is a priest without a vocation and, as of last week, without a parish. But right now she has two things at her disposal: an envelope containing 5,000 kronor and an excellent idea....

Victor Alderheim has a lot to answer for. Not only has he heartlessly tricked his young ex-wife, Jenny, out of her art gallery inheritance, but he has also abandoned his son, Kevin, to die in the middle of the Kenyan savanna. It doesn’t occur to Victor that Kevin might be rescued and adopted by a Maasai medicine man, or that he might be expected to undergo the rituals expected of all new Maasai warriors - which have him running back to Stockholm as fast as you can say circumcision without anaesthetic.

Summary
As delightfully wry and witty as his best-selling debut, The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared, this is a tale of how one young woman's attempt to change her future ends up changing everything.
On 14th June, 2007, the King of Sweden disappears. In 1994 South Africa dismantles six missiles developed during its brief nuclear weapons programme. In 1961 Nombeko Mayeki is born in a Soweto shack. Seemingly destined for a life nasty, brutish and short, her path takes an entirely unpredictable turn. Because really this story is all about the seventh South African missile - the one that was never supposed to have existed. The one that Nombeko knows far too much about.
So now she's on the run and running into twins who are officially one person, a Vietnam vet, and a potato-loving Baroness. But the fate of the King of Sweden, and indeed the world, will remain on her shoulders alone.

An Intellectual Laugh-out-loud Read!!
THIS IS MY FAVOURITE AUDIBLE BOOK FOR THE YEAR 2015!!
This book got me laughing and intrigued within the first 2-3 minutes! With my ribs aching from laughter, and my mind so stimulated and demanding more, I had to set aside the book as one best read in the company of my spouse! And that we did - we'd look forward to our bedtime in anticipation of listening to the book together for at least an hour every night and then the next day, we'd reminisce over the parts of the story that'd made us laugh and try to figure out where the author would take us next. And it's not just the content that's so hilarious, it's the narrator too - I actually think the narrator made this book a success and delivered it so well as to draw out the author's intended reaction from the readers.
At every junction, you're left believing things couldn't get any worse or better or funnier or more complex, but they do all the way til the very end!! The inclusion of elements of history, science and maths, might serve to keep the reader intellectually stimulated, but honestly, they all add to the hilarity and madness of the story. Just think, how is it that a black African girl from an impoverished background and living in the slums of Johannesburg in South Africa can end up saving the Swedish king? This book is an intellectually stimulating laugh-out-read that will get you questioning your history knowledge and believing in the impossible!!!

Enjoyable but not quite 5-stars
I purchased this after loving "The 100-year old man...". It's written in the same style and very imaginative, but I have only given this one 4 stars since for me the second half dragged a little bit. Having said that, I'd still recommend it if you enjoyed Jonasson's first book. I think Peter Kenny does a great job narrating.

If you could sum up The Girl Who Saved the King of Sweden in three words, what would they be?
Clever funny improbable
What other book might you compare The Girl Who Saved the King of Sweden to, and why?
Similar humour to the hundred year man.
What about Peter Kenny’s performance did you like?
The matter of fact style of delivery
If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
Modern history wrapped in a black comedy

As delightful as the Hundred Year Old Man
If you could sum up The Girl Who Saved the King of Sweden in three words, what would they be?
If you liked Hundred Year Old Man, you'll like this. Same way of telling a story, same sewing together of various characters and scenes, same wit and wisdom. Just delightful. The only thing I would say is don't read it too soon after The Man, I would find it too similar one after the other.

Quirky
Very much like the 100 year old man in that the improbable occurs on a regular basis, and everything lines up rather too usefully. That said, having grown up in South Africa during the apartheid years, I enjoyed the South African scenes which if they hadn't been so light-heartedly written might have been rather upsetting given their "well-observed-truth".
An easy listening credit. Perfect for when you need something entertaining and uncomplicated.

Fantastic - put a massive smile on my face
Where does The Girl Who Saved the King of Sweden rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
This has to be one of my favourite - smart, intelligent, witty and chock full of charm
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Girl Who Saved the King of Sweden?
The moment that I realised the story had taken us from the slums of South Africa cleaning out toilets, to sitting in the back of a potato truck with the King and Prime Minister of Sweden and a 3-mega-tonne nuclear bomb. Absolutely brilliant.
What does Peter Kenny bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
He manages to perfectly capture the dry wit of the book and is a pleasure to listen to.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Many a time, despite the dry humour this was a book that definitely has a heart. (But to give too much away would spoil the fun of those who haven't yet read it.)
Any additional comments?

More of the same clever, comic plotting
If you enjoyed 'The 100 Year-old Man...' then this is basically more of the same - potted twentieth (and twenty-first) century social and political history as seen through the tangled, implausible lives of joyously wacky fictional characters - not easy to pull off, but so well executed by Mr Jonasson (works for me, anyway). Uplifting, satirical, and essentially sympathetic humour which makes the complexities of our difficult world a little more palatable. Told at a very satisfying pace, which ties up all loose threads. I must credit the narrator who does an excellent job of capturing the light tone, and is just brilliant at each of the varied accents, seamlessly switching from one to the next (I love the way he uses regional British accents for the Swedish characters - in this, and the '100 Year-Old Man'). I'm now looking forward to reading 'Hitman Anders'.
