Summary

The basis for Joseph L. Mankiewicz's cinematic romance starring Gene Tierney and Rex Harrison.

Burdened by debt after her husband's death, Lucy Muir insists on moving into the very cheap Gull Cottage in the quaint seaside village of Whitecliff, despite multiple warnings that the house is haunted. Upon discovering the rumors to be true, the young widow ends up forming a special companionship with the ghost of handsome former sea captain Daniel Gregg. Through the struggles of supporting her children, seeking out romance from the wrong places, and working to publish the captain's story as a book, Blood and Swash, Lucy finds in her secret relationship with Captain Gregg a comfort and blossoming love she never could have predicted.

Originally published in 1945, made into a movie in 1947, and later adapted into a television sitcom in 1968, this romantic tale explores how love can develop without boundaries, both in this life and beyond.

Gentle romantic history

Nice little slice of 1940s imagination. Now feel the need to track down the film.

Back to my childhood

My Mother read this book in the ‘50’s before I was born and we watched together the tv series from the US when I was a child.
This little bit of nostalgia made me smile. It was well read and I enjoyed it, nothing more to say.

wonderful!

one of my favourite films, this audio book did not disappoint. beautifully narrated. I could picture the actors from the film as I was listening.
this story should be a lot better known than it is - a quiet classic.

Very enjoyable

This book was a very quirky and pleasant experience. The narrator has a very soothing voice which made the journey through the book easy and tranquil. The story took you back to the past but wasn’t over focused on the period, the story stood independently.

Poignant !

This was something different, I remember seeing the TV series many years ago, but the book is nothing like the show. A lovely story, well read, I even found a few tears forming when we got to Martha trying to give Lucy the hot milk! I loved this.
