About this listen

With all of the pluck and charm of its eponymous young hero, Rachel McAdams (The Notebook, Spotlight, Midnight in Paris) delivers a spectacular reading of Montgomery's beloved bildungsroman. In moments both funny and bittersweet, McAdams' voice is imbued with the spark that has made Anne a much-loved symbol of individualism and cheer for over a century. In this story of "kindred spirits", McAdams' touching and heartfelt narration proves she is just that - bonded on a deep level to this shimmering classic.

When aging brother and sister Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert decide to adopt an orphan boy to help with chores around their farm, Green Gables on Prince Edward Island, neither is prepared for the feisty and imaginative redheaded girl who is mistakenly brought to them instead. Nor are they prepared for the way in which she will change their lives. Through a series of hilarious misadventures, Anne's uncompromising spirit makes her a striking presence in the close-knit village, bringing new friendships, first crushes, and, for her foster parents, a love and openness unimaginable before her arrival.

"Listeners will relish this production of L.M. Montgomery's classic.... As Anne, McAdams's delivery is light and breathy and ever so speedy, but clear and eloquent." ( AudioFile)

I think the narrator did a first-rate performance. All the characters are beautifully represented. Would recommend highly. Just sorry that the sequels are nit by same narrator.

Fantastic rendering of well-loved book

I was a little apprehensive to listen to Anne of Green Gables as an audiobook because it is one of my favourite childhood books. Anne is like an old friend to me I was afraid the story would be ruined by a bad narrator. There are many versions of this book available, read by many different narrators but this is the version to choose. Rachel McAdams reads this story wonderfully! I feel as though she enjoys telling the story and reads naturally & comfortably, with expression but not over- dramatically. And her voice is just lovely to listen to. I would love it if she were to return & read the rest of the series! Please?!

Beautiful story. Perfect narration by McAdams, read with charm and a tone that is perfect for the story.
Loved this story and this narration.

Charming, funny and touching

Such a delightful classic and Rachel McAdams reads it perfectly. Anne's character comes across so well as do those of the other characters. So disappointed that Rachel has not read any others in the series.

Perfect reading

This is a good children's book that is great for adults too. The story is about an orphan who goes to live with an adult brother and sister and becomes their child. A happy story that will not disappoint. I did however think the narration could have been improved.

A good book.
