Summary

Lark Rise is Flora Thompson's childhood memories of a north Oxfordshire village, the people who lived and worked in it, and a way of life that has totally disappeared. The story is built around Laura and her brother Edmund, through whose eyes are seen 'old Sally', whose grandfather built the house she lived in before the enclosure of the heathland, children's games, the interaction of village and gentry, and the way in which the seasons governed life.

A true classic, well read.

Like many, I know of Larkrise through the BBC adaptation but this book had remained unread on my shelf. I really enjoyed this version and found the narration easy to listen to with no 'rustification' more than necessary.
Don't expect a straight narrative - it's a loose collection of observations and recollections.
As I tend to listen to Audible on journeys, I was curious to realise that I was passing Juniper Hill (just off the link road between the M1 and Oxford) and took a look. Some of the stone houses of 'The Rise' can still be seen.

Lovely book about a past era

I loved this book. It is well written and well narrated and gives an excellent insight to rural life in the 1880's. Flora Thompson was a skilled writer and a contemporary of this time; I did not want the book to end.
Karen Cass captured the characters with great skill and compassion.

Enchanting

Magical but realistic….similar style to Call The Midwife…from spellbinding to caustic…beautiful range of emotions. ❤️

Essays on social history, rather than a novel with characters and a plot

Never listened to a book quite like this before. I admit I only got several chapters in before giving up. It was very well written for what it is, but it’s essays on social history rather than anything else. Initially I enjoyed it as the descriptions were so vivid, and I was learning things. Then I found myself annoyed that there was no plot and hardly any mention of the main characters, or in fact any characters. I was just learning to picture that time and location in my mind, very well, which is fine if that’s what you want.

I’m not sure if it was the narrator or the story but I just didn’t connect with it. I found the narrator was reading it as if it was essays, which it kind of is.

A hard simple way if life

A real joy. The rhythm of the tale against a rhythm of the life back then

Great Book Extremely Well Read

Really interesting to hear how a small Hamlet operated at the end of the 19th Century.

Wonderful book - and beautifully read.

Really enjoyed this. I was in the play adaptation when in school, so it was a lovely experience to read the book.

A wonderful book you must listen to

The Hamlet is described so perfectly, it’s easy to imagine yourself gazing at the wheat fields and the characters feel like old neighbours. You couldn’t have chosen a better narrator. One of my favourite Audible books and I’ll listen to it again because I love the way it made me feel. And the ending, so poignant.
