About this listen

Jane Austen’s most popular novel, originally published in 1813, some 17 years after it was first written, presents the Bennet family of Longbourn. Against the background of gossipy Mrs. Bennet and the detached Mr. Bennet, the quest is on for husbands for the five daughters. The spotlight falls on Elizabeth, second eldest, who is courted by Mr. Darcy, though initially she is more concerned with the fate of her other sisters. This marvelous account of family life in Regency England is read with customary panache by Juliet Stevenson.

If I could have made one request of an audiobook it would have been to have my favourite book of all time read by my favourite female narrator. I sat and listened at every opportunity during one week. It will not be the last time I listen as the reading of Pride and Prejudice has been something I have done every few years. To have it read by Juliet Stevenson whilst cooking or knitting was, for me, bliss.
On the critical side I would say Jane’s voice was a little too simpering for me but it didn’t detract from the overall experience.
So worth the credit!

A Real Treat!

I absolutely love Jane Austin. Pride and Prejudice has a slightly complicated storyline at times but the language is so beautiful you can just let it wash over you like music. The performance is amazing, all of the character voices suit their personalities perfectly. Overall it is one of (in my opinion) one of the best books ever written and the performance does it justice perfectly!

Love It❤️📚📖

I was thrilled to find that there was finally a version of the book performed by Juliet Stevenson. For some reason, she had done every Jane Austen except this one. I ended up buying 4 or 5 other versions to try to find a good one, but all had something lacking.

The biggest problem for most is the voices of Mr Bennet and Darcy. Many female readers strain to produce a lower register voice, which ends up sounding monotonous and 'off'. Juliet's beautiful textured contralto voice copes with this perfectly and if it is an effort for her, you wouldn't know it.

She is also an immensely talented actress which means she neither over dramatizes nor under dramatizes. Mrs Bennet doesn't sound like a panto dame, and crucial scenes such as Darcy's first proposal make for fabulous listening.

Thank you Juliet for finally doing this one!!

Finally - the perfect performance!

Juliet Stevenson is a fantastic narrator and gave me the great pleasure of revisiting an old favourite as though for the first time.
I’d love to know why she had been instructed to execute a little cough to hide the names of people, places and regiments?

A very familiar storyline given new life.
