This novella has everything Wright does well - that gothic feel, the dark atmosphere, the horror that's not too scary for a wimp like me... *ahem* She always strikes a great balance for me: her books are horror without being terrifying; there's murder, but I wouldn't call it gory. I listened to the audiobook, and the narrator does a fabulous job of conveying that atmosphere Wright's books are known for.
I liked that it didn't quite end the way I thought it would - there were elements of what I thought would happen, but it also played out differently. It's not a story of possession - which I was sure it was in the beginning - but rather a story of a mental health struggle. This needs to be tackled carefully, and this is where I'm torn. I can't decide if this is the story of a girl who does something terrible and finds comfort in her fractured mental health (which I would love) or if this is the story of a girl who hears voices and sees things and is compelled to murder by her hallucinations (which I wouldn't love). I want to believe it's the former, but it wasn't clear from the story (unless I missed something, which is possible!), so I'm torn.
Being a short read, this would be perfect for a chilly autumn afternoon with a hot tea and a few candles flickering around you. I'm a slow reader but could have got through it in one sitting! It's an easy recommendation if you love gothic horror but, like me, are a coward and can't take much ;)
