Summary

Another strange and frightening tale by Nikolai Gogol with roots in Ukrainian lore. When a poor peasant falls in love with the daughter of a wealthy farmer, a dark power interferes, promising him the fulfillment of his wishes but neglecting to mention the terrible price.

Old-school horror - not scary, but enjoyable

Another old-school horror novel from the series. I quite enjoyed this one to be honest. Gogol (the author) is one who's work I really like having read some of his other novels.

As I said in the review title, it's not scary but it is full of character and gives a really nice description of the prejudices of the time.

Again, this feels a bit short for an audio book and would have been much better as part of a collection, but it is good as it is.

The narration is from the same narrator as the rest of the series (the ones I've listened to at least), and while his telling of the story is definitely quirky, it somehow worked for me and felt right for the time the story is about.
