About this listen

Hugo and Nebula award-winning author, David Gerrold, explores the darker realms in these seven unsettling stories. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to have a pet dinosaur? Or maybe you'd like to attend the devil's enrollment seminar? Or perhaps a sleepless journey on the night train to Paris? And by the way...what's chewing on the dream catcher?

First off. The cover of this book (As off this writing. Audible does change some now and then) is a little misleading. It suggests gothic stories of ghosts and dungeons, not unlike the work of J S Fanu or even Mary Shelley. What's on display here isn't like that at all, but it is pretty varied. The closest I can think of for a comparison is the collections of Richard Matheson out there.

The open in story about a man who's body starts growing flowers is beautiful and a little sad. But could have used a bit more characterisation. Then we get a comedic story about a father driven to near insanity by his daughter's awful pets that would have felt just right in a Tales From the Crypt issue. The next two stories suffer from each being one one joke that gets played out a bit too long, but I wouldn't call them bad. But the final story set on a Night Train is a gem. One of the creepiest stories I've heard in a long time, and with some strong character writing to boot!

These are neat little experiments. Give this a shot if you just want some straight forward short stories with real effort put into them.

Each one different them the others. All creative

I REALLY enjoyed these stories.

they are about 1 hour each, and they are really imaginative, and haunting, without resorting to any of the usual tropes.

What I mean is don't expect gore, but you can expect to find weird haunting tales and in some cases genuine horror.

I highly recommend this.
