Summary

A heartbreaking psychological thriller that will keep you guessing right until the end.

You lost your daughter. You will never forgive yourself. And now someone is determined to make you pay....

Seventeen years ago, something happened to Jess' daughter, Beth. The memory of it still makes her blood run cold. Jess has tried everything to make peace with that day and the part she played in what happened. It was only a brief moment of desire...but she'll pay for it with a lifetime of guilt.

To distance herself from the mistakes of the past, Jess has moved away and started over with her family. But when terrifying things begin happening in her new home, seemingly connected to what happened to Beth, Jess knows that her past has finally caught up with her. Somebody feels Jess hasn't paid enough and is determined to make her suffer for the secrets she's kept all these years.

a good listen, tearful at times

This is a story about grief and guilt, played well. No laughs. The first act is heart wrenching, but it settles down in the middle and devolops the characters well.

Narration is first class. truth, is I likely wouldn't have finished it without the great narrating.

Wouldn't recommend this to anyone who has lost a loved one recently... might be too much!

Obvious

It was interesting to start with but all became fairly obvious and sometimes far fetched.

Far fetched ...

Overall, well enough written but overblown and a bit unlikely. Some people just seem to have so much bad luck. Ed is much too good to be true and despite the “happy ending” I can’t help feeling that he’ll turn out to be a psychopath....look out for the sequel? Not.

The Daughter

Once I had got past the beginning I loved listening to this book. The start is so upsetting I nearly stopped listening. I’m glad I carried on because the rest of the book was gripping with lots of suspense.

Interesting enough to finish it, but...

I can't say that I liked this one and I wouldn't recommend it. It was depressing, and unbelievable at times, and I didn't like most of the characters. It ties together for a descent ending, but that really wasn't enough.

Very disappointed

The lead female character leaves her husband who loves her more than anything because of her former boyfriends wife. So instead of coming clean herself she decides to leave him, literally with no word to him. People that do stupid crap like this make me sick. So telling her husband the truth is worse than leaving him. The idiots always say “I was trying to protect him”. So the action she chose couldn’t possible hurt him. Disgusting & refuse to listen for another moment.

Nothing special

This is very stereotypical British suspense, not my favorite book by this author. I figured it what was going on about half way through the book and really only finished it to see if I was right. That being said it was interesting enough that I don't regret listening to it.

It was an emotional start...

A long, slow burn middle and somewhat of an unrewarding ending. Overall, it was good. But if you like a fast-paced thriller with twists around every corner, this probably won't hold your attention. That being said, some of the language and imagery from part one were quite lovely.

3.5

This story kept me interested and the twist was a surprise. Like most fans of psych thrillers, I love when the author surprises me with an ending I did not anticipate.

Ms Atkins has a pleasing voice for the main character and projects well so that there is no straining to hear. However, her voices for the other characters are not as good and at times irritating enough to distract from the story.

Overall, worth a credit.

This is one of those books that you can't put down and won't soon forget. If you're trying to decide which book to use your credit on, choose this one. One of my best listens of the year (and I listen a lot)!

Just didn't care for story.

I will not be looking for this author's next book. The story was just to obviously made up. I didn't connect to it.

What a great ride!

I was hesitant to get this after checking out the reviews. So glad I caved. This book was excellent! Written by a skilled mind and read with exceptional emotions, truly a masterpiece. Definitely worth the money or credit. 😀😀

Had to add my 2 cents

The reviews were so polarizing, so I wanted to add my two cents. This was an entertaining book- with relatable characters, and a plot twist that I did not predict. I won’t “read” it again, once was enough, but I very much enjoyed my first “read”, and do not consider it a waste of time or a credit. Can recommend.
