Story
She bursts into my life like a storm, and nothing is the same again. One by one, I watch as my friends fall under her spell. Only I see that her smiles don’t reach her cold, furious eyes. And when I’m accused of things I didn’t do, when my home is vandalized, I know she’s behind it. But she only lets her mask slip when no one is looking, so if I say anything, I’ll look crazy. So when the baby shower comes around, I’m sitting on a velvet sofa in a posh hotel room, surrounded by balloons. But that afternoon, I finally learn the unbelievable truth. There is no baby....

Story
The white-washed Italian villa is perfect. I thought it might feel odd, living in a stranger’s house for the summer, but as my husband and children swim in the infinity pool, I start to relax. And then, in the back of a wardrobe, I find something that shatters everything.... Sparkling green eyes, square jaw, lopsided smile. A young man with his arm around a beautiful woman. The picture is old and faded, but I’d recognize him anywhere. The man is my husband.

Story
She’ll never forget...I’ll never forgive. People always notice my daughter, Isobel. How could they not? Incredibly beautiful...until she speaks. An unsettling little-girl voice, exactly like a child’s, but from the mouth of a full-grown woman. Izzie might look grown up, but inside she’s trapped. Caught in the day it happened...the day that broke her from within. Our family fell apart that day, and we never could pick up the pieces....

a good listen, tearful at times
This is a story about grief and guilt, played well. No laughs. The first act is heart wrenching, but it settles down in the middle and devolops the characters well.
Narration is first class. truth, is I likely wouldn't have finished it without the great narrating.
Wouldn't recommend this to anyone who has lost a loved one recently... might be too much!

It was an emotional start...
A long, slow burn middle and somewhat of an unrewarding ending. Overall, it was good. But if you like a fast-paced thriller with twists around every corner, this probably won't hold your attention. That being said, some of the language and imagery from part one were quite lovely.

Interesting enough to finish it, but...
I can't say that I liked this one and I wouldn't recommend it. It was depressing, and unbelievable at times, and I didn't like most of the characters. It ties together for a descent ending, but that really wasn't enough.

Had to add my 2 cents
The reviews were so polarizing, so I wanted to add my two cents. This was an entertaining book- with relatable characters, and a plot twist that I did not predict. I won’t “read” it again, once was enough, but I very much enjoyed my first “read”, and do not consider it a waste of time or a credit. Can recommend.

3.5
This story kept me interested and the twist was a surprise. Like most fans of psych thrillers, I love when the author surprises me with an ending I did not anticipate.
Ms Atkins has a pleasing voice for the main character and projects well so that there is no straining to hear. However, her voices for the other characters are not as good and at times irritating enough to distract from the story.
Overall, worth a credit.

Nothing special
This is very stereotypical British suspense, not my favorite book by this author. I figured it what was going on about half way through the book and really only finished it to see if I was right. That being said it was interesting enough that I don't regret listening to it.

Very disappointed
The lead female character leaves her husband who loves her more than anything because of her former boyfriends wife. So instead of coming clean herself she decides to leave him, literally with no word to him. People that do stupid crap like this make me sick. So telling her husband the truth is worse than leaving him. The idiots always say “I was trying to protect him”. So the action she chose couldn’t possible hurt him. Disgusting & refuse to listen for another moment.
