About this listen

When Jonathan Harker visits Transylvania to help Count Dracula with the purchase of a house in London, he soon discovers some strange and shocking things about his new client. And then some strange things start happening back in England: an apparently unmanned ship is wrecked off the coast of Whitby, a young woman discovers strange puncture marks on her neck and the inmate of a lunatic asylum raves about the 'Master' and his imminent arrival.

First published in 1897, Dracula is an epistolary novel, meaning that the narrative is related through letters, diary entries and newspaper articles. The story is brought to life in this Audible production by a group of actors that you might recognise from TV and film: Himesh Patel (Yesterday), Patricia Allison (Sex Education), Daisy Edgar-Jones (Normal People), Theo James (Divergent series) and Jason Watkins (The Crown).

If you’re in the mood for more gothic classics, check out The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde performed by Pappa Essiedu and Frankenstein performed by Jamie Bell.

This team of talented voice actors swept me away into this genuinly thrilling story. The time went by at a gripping pace, and the plot satisfied every curiosity. Even if Van Helsing does like his monologues.

I thought people just liked it be ause it was old

We all know the Dracula story from countless (no pun intended!) film and TV adaptations, but its good to go back to the source, and the familiar characters, tropes and quotes are all there. Although set at the tail end of the 19th Century and at heart a Gothic Horror, it feels surprisingly modern with cutting edge developments of the time such as the use of audio diaries and hypnotism pulling it towards the 20th Century and beyond.

All the performances in this book are fantastic and the story is of course excellent, The final third, dominated by Van Helsing and the chase to catch Dracula drags a bit with some repetition and the end feels a bit of an anti climax, but that's a minor critism of a great story well presented

Classic Gothic Horror, But surprisingly modern

Have tried reading the book a couple of times but got a bit bored halfway through. But having the story read to you and by top quality voice actors, had me completely absorbed in the story the whole way through. Really enjoyed it.

Great story but the actors make it even better.

If you have never read or listened to Dracula, do it now! This audio performance does the excellent story and writing justice.

Fantastic story, very well performed

I don’t think I like the epistolary style, and the novel is a little slow. It also doesn’t really have any scary parts. Good performances though. Clearly an important and influential book, you can see how it has influenced so much that has come after it.
